Let’s start off with a few facts!
1) I’m getting married on a Thursday in late May at a gorgeous once-private estate. Outdoor ceremony is at 4pm, followed by party in the house’s atrium.
2) I want it to still feel formal and somewhat glam, while still keeping a small, exclusive, private party atmosphere.
3) My bridesmaids vary from 4’11 to 5’11. They are black, indian, and 2 are white with red hair … and range in bodytypes.
I originally thought I wanted my bridesmaids to wear navy mixmatched dresses. I thought it would be easy for them to find, slimming, simple, and be classy. The only thing I wanted is for the dress to be unique. For example: have lace, sparkles, pleating – something! The groomsmen were/are going to wear gray to compliment the navy.
Here is what I had in mind:
BUT THEN…I got to looking around on Pinterest. Every picture I saw with champagne or cream dresses made me SWOON! For example:
GORGEOUS! Right? Considering: 1) Who my lovely ladies are 2) What “feel” I’m going for 3) The season and time of day … what color would you go for? Any pros and cons for either color? Any suggestions on where I can find these dresses?

@sarahdearest: Make your decision and then let the girls find their own dresses. You are obviously ok with them being mismatched.

I love the idea of mismatched dresses in a similar shade – very anthropologie chic. I am leaning toward the nude/blush (not just because those are my colors too) but because it’s nice and airy for the time of year your wedding is going to take place. Navy seems very Fall to me – but that’s just my opinion =) Good luck! Which ever you choose, I’m sure it will be gorgeous!

@sarahdearest: One thing I’ll mention. I wanted cream/nude BM dresses, possibly blush. Then we started trying these colours on. My bridesmaids have very fair skin, and they just weren’t working how we thought they would. They looked much better in pictures than on for some reason. Some were just too skin colourish and looked blah. It might be the lighting in the stores too. But we weren’t wowed by any so far. Now we are going a bit darker I think.. cappucino/mocha, etc.
The creams/beiges always look so much better in pictures for some reason.
I think stick with your original vision. Or get the girls to try on the creams and see what you think, and go from there. I’m guessing with the red hair, the skin tones may be quite fair, so navy may be better. Or do sparkle nude dresses, that could be lovely and give them some extra jazz.

@sarahdearest: Ugh we are idea twins! I have been obsessing over champagne dresses for my girls, but one of my BM said I should really stand out and that the champage would blend in with me and my dress – which I agree with to an extent! But I just love them. Right now I am swaying more towards navy, but of course next week I will probably change my mind. So I vote navy!

Idea twins – LOVE it! :)Thanks for telling me that @thehappiestbride to be. Ultimately I’m going to go with the navy too. As much as I love the champage, I think navy may be more fad-resistant and stand the test of time. At least that’s what I’m trying to tell myself! 🙂

Blue is the better choice. I debated the nude look myself but my ladies preferred the other color they knew would work well on them (grey/silver tones) and be more timeless. the nude really looks best in the bridesmaids pics where all are blondes, white, and very thin too – which isnt your bridal party (or mine)

I am probably a minority here, but I absolutely hate the whole nude/champagne/cream bridesmaid dress trend that’s going on. Yes, in pictures, it can be gorgeous. But I guess I’ve always wanted to make sure that I stand out on my wedding day (oh goodness that sounds a little center stage selfish lol), and the bridesmaids in such a similar color just takes a little away from the bride.
I love your navy idea – but maybe a shopping trip is in order to see how you all feel about the nude/blush idea? I would check with your girls though before you do a complete overhaul – with your date coming up so close (I’m getting married in May too!), they might have already purchased something in navy that can’t be returned…
Either way, your wedding will be beautiful! Congrats!

It depends on what suits your bridesmaids best. I’m pale with red hair and nude shades look terrible on me! It just completely washea me out, I’m much better in jewel shades. Whereas my two sisters have a lot more tan in their complexions and they both look fantastic in nude/blush pinks which is what I chose for their dresses. Navy might just be a bit easier on your red headed bridesmaids.
