A Christmas Engagement?

How common is this?? I feel like every pre-Christmas season we get bombarded with jeweler advertisements about engagement rings... but how many of us get an e-ring for Christmas? I suppose in theory it makes sense -- it's a gift-giving day, you're surrounded by family, it's sort of a romantic time of year... I am wondering if it could happen for me, since I think my SO knows that I want to be engaged with family or friends present, and all our family and friends are in Portland or Seattle (we live in Hawaii), and this Christmas would be good timing-wise since we are only in the Northwest so often together.

Anyone have a sweet Christmas engagement story to fuel my excitement?? Laughing

no! but that's one of the ways i pictured getting engaged - in a cabin with a fire going and hot cocoa and being cozy :) instead, it was on a hammock in the caribbean on a hot day.

Good luck, i hope you get your proposal soon!

No stories here... but hopefully will have one soon!  I thought my dream engagement would be around Christmas in NYC by one of those huge christmas trees!  I brought up going to NYC for christmas... but that got shot down!  Too much $$$  Would love to hear everyone else's stories though!

I thought about it recently, and I don't want a Christmas proposal (though I suspect I could change my mind on that, if it actually happened that way).  There's something about being surrounded by my family that makes me blush and kinda cringe.  Though, there's a good chance that it will happen around that time bc our "date-aversary" is during the holiday season.  Yeah, so I second the cute holiday engagement stories!!

I TOTALLY agree with lovesthebear lol.

For some reason I feel like I might be a little embarrased if he did it in front of my family (not that there would be any reason for that)

I would rather have it be a private moment between him and I, whether it be at a restaurant or at home.

Of course....if it did happen to be at Christmas time I'm sure  I will be really happy lol

Ahh, the hot cocoa, NYC, a Christmas tree... yes that all sounds lovely!! :-D

You know, I used to think I didn't want a Christmas proposal (long before I was ever in a relationship headed for marriage), because I thought, "Hey! That's cheating... you're double-dipping the ring as a Christmas present!" HA! How bratty is that?! But also because to me, Christmas is so special, and I thought I would want to make an entirely different day special with an engagement. I don't think I really feel that way anymore though... I'm kind of on the same page as some of you guys with the, "hey, if it happens then, I'll take it!" philosophy. Also the Christmas eve story... that sounds very sweet!

Although I feel you guys on thinking that maybe you wouldn't want everyone and their mother (literally) around during such a special moment... I must admit: probably the biggest reason why I want others around is so that they could take pictures!! My best friend's now sister-in-law took pictures as her then-fiance was proposing to her, and just the rawness that they captured of that emotional moment was so priceless! I mean, an engagement shoot is one thing, but right there in the moment I think it would be so cool to have someone taking pics!

FI stayed at my house Christmas Eve (he has his own room) and he came in early in the morning, before everyone else was up. We snuggled up in bed because it was FREEZING even with the heat on (it was my first white Christmas, thought I'd mention that). He said he already asked the rest of my family and I had no idea what he was talking about. Then he said he loved me and asked me to spend the rest of his life with me. He wasn't down on one knee, but it was so romantic and so US!!

I almost posted this last night!! (Great minds think alike) i would LOVE a Christmas proposal surrounded my family and friends toasting to us after I say yes the questions, etc.  It's always been one of my favorites. OMG like the lexus commercials <3.. in the snow with a snowman, on a ribbon on the Christmas tree, in a series of bigger boxes getting smaller and smaller, in my rice cooker that I want for Chrismtas <3... i mean waking up christmas morning with the sparkley on my finger. this is seriously my favorite way to get engaged and i would love it and am crazy enough to say he could ALMOST wait until next year around christmas day, eve... but new years eve holds the same romantic feeling for me.  this year we'll be at my mom's for christmas and she has two great fireplaces and a 10 or 12 foot tree... and well it would be so perfect and awesome.  sigh...

my birthday is on christmas day...i had guessed he had bought a ring and was super antsy waiting to see if i was right.  so on christmas eve i open a little ring box from the store he took me to look at engagement rings and...its not an engagement ring, but just a fancy band with some channel set diamonds (still a beautiful gift-but what a cruel joke!).  he even said to me "it goes on this hand" and pointed to my right hand.  i cried through my birthday/christmas day because everyone kept calling and asking me what i got...so i got to say "a ring...no, not that kind of diamond ring" over and over again!  sure enough, he proposed on new years eve...he said it was all part of his evil plan!

I just want my ringgg! Haha. If he proposed around Christmas and it was just us two, I can't think of a better way to be asked. Christmas just makes me all warm and fuzzy inside anyway. But if he asked in front of my whole family, eh. I don't know. I really hope that doesn't happen. I want to be together for a few hours and it be our secret before we announce it to the whole world, you know?

I had a Christmas Eve engagement! He proposed at his family's annual tree-trimming in front of like 30 family and friends!I had a feeling that he was going to and I thought I had all of these clues! I thought two of his brothers told me by accident, but come to find out, they didn't even know!! but back tot he story...

What happens is, everyone brings an ornament to hang on the tree and one at a time, we stand up, tell about the blessings God has brought that year, and hang the ornament. Well, I first thought it was strange that my parents and brother came. You see, my mom's not the gathering type and told me she only came the year prior because she thought K was going to propose. She hadn't planned on coming again! Then, it was weird that Kyle wasn't in the room while everyone was telling their stories. He was out in the kitchen as I sat next to his friends and family with knots in my stomach. THEN, as he was the last one to speak, he looked strange. He's a business man, a deacon, and a natural public speaker, so the flushed cheeks, sweaty brow, and nervous nature was very out of the ordinary. He stammered, "I want to thank God for three things, first my family (and he elaborated while my thoughts went in and out,) secondly, my schooling (he almost had to drop out due to finances, but was able to stay in school,) and lastly, I'm grateful that you are all here to witness as I... { This was where I convinced myself that nothing was going to happen "Don't get excited, Don't get excited! It's not gonna happen!} PROPOSE TO MY GIRLFRIEND!"

And after that the room spun and I cried but no tears could come out. I was forced to go around the WHOLE room and show EVERYONE my new shining ring. K was so nervous he could hardly kiss me- he didn't know what to do!

Then I went outside to breathe and looked at the stars like I always do and thanked the good Lord. [Especially since I had told all my close co-workers and my mom that I had a feeling he was going to do it on Christmas Eve, even though my evidence was false! That could have been SO embarassing!] Turns out he had gone over to my house the night before (cutting it kinda close) and asked my mom, dad, and bro since they were all there. I was told he came in soaking from the rain and stood in the living room and I gues struggled with what to say. Then my brother said "What, do you want to marry my sister?" he laughed and said yes and my mom said he only could if he picked up our cat. He hates cats, but he bent over to do it! She was just joking!! And the questions and prodding that my family did is between them because they wouldn't tell me anymore.

P.s. He gave me a promise ring 2 years before on Christmas Day!!! It was the ring his father gave his mother before she left for 4 years in the army. When she came back, they got married! It's a pearl with a diamond on either side.

I got engaged on December 22nd of lst year. My ring wasn't meant to be my Christmas gift (though I didn't get much else after that from FI since he was broke), but mostly because I was home from school to visit him for Christmas time. But yeah, I suppose it's a pretty common time for engagements.

    Hey bees -

I ALSO GOT ENGAGED ON CHRISTMAS EVE!!!!! :) My fiance and I traveled from NC up to MN and were staying with my family. We went out to 'look at christmas lights' but drove in a separate car than my family. Our little hometown had christmas lights and music in the Central Park. We couldn't hear the music, so he suggested we got out of the car. I had a spark of an idea that he was going to propose, but brushed it aside. Sure enough, he got down on one knee - my family rushed out of the other car, and it was THE MOST PERFECT ENGAGEMENT EVER!!!!!! Also, he asked my parents the night before. And he snuck the ring through the airport. He later told me that the security guard running the x-ray machine gave him 'a look' when he saw the ring pass through Airport Security Screening.

I alwyas thought I wanted a Baseball Game Proposal.... but I am SO HAPPY with the Christmas Eve - Engagement. It was wonderful!!!!

He bought the ring in Oct of 2007.

He proposed on Christmas Day of 2008. And, for a few weeks afterwards: I hate him for proposing to me on that day in front of my family and his. I had waited so long for that stupid ring (it caused so many fights) and I was disappointed. :(

I wanted something romantic and totally "us"...I got something genetic without any romantic words and a rushed display because his stupid parents were planning on "leaving early"

It was nice that my family got to see it but now I have no story to tell. And, than my mom started to cry which in return started me off..than my sister..than his mom..than his dad..than...and the only one who wasn't crying was him and he was looking around with a shock look probably thinking "oh crap, was it that bad?"

I guess I'm bitter. I didn't want to get engaged on V-day or christmas and he knew it. And, our roommate let it slip that he had something else specially planned at Animal Kingdom...but it didn't happen.

But, it good to hear others had great proposal on such a special day!

@ceo528: great story!! i'd love to have it that way, i think the only fam would be my immediate family, my mom, stepdad, stepsisters nephew nieces and son.. still a lot but more intimate.  omg my entire immediate family is like 80 or 90 folks, it would be so noisy that he wouldn't be able to do it there unless he took me outside lol! i can see my aunts now saying "i can't hear nothing, and another would you shut up he hasn't asked yet.. is that a diamond, no, ewww i wonder why not" he must be cheap lol!

@floridabeachbride: it sounded sweet to me... especially when everyone was crying and poor thing he was probably so uber nervous and when everyone started crying he probably almost pooed himself..

@alundberg: LOVE THAT SMILE!! you look sooo happy!! and your proposal was soo sweet.. hmm i love the christmas lights too.. lol! i don't think i'd care as long as it was during the christmas season.

i am usually in an incredibly foul mood around this time of the year because i always wanted a christmas proposal. i think that he may know this because i was witchy last year around this time, but oh well who knows lol

LittleMissMango, I got engaged on Christmas eve.  My (now) husband and I live in Hawaii too (on Maui) and we were home with my family for the holidays.  Although we live on a beautiful, romantic island, he proposed on a snowy walk through the woods (I was wearing my brother's camoflage pants!!!) at my parents house.  It was great because we were able to celebrate with all of the family who we rarely see living out here.

Aww these stories are cute. And Floridabeachbride... you do have a story. Sure, it's not what you wanted.. but the little imperfections of life are what make life so perfect--you did get the man of your dreams, and you can tell your kids that one christmas you got the best gift ever!

I'm not sure I would like a proposal in front of family. It does seem like something that should be more private. But, I still think it'd be nice around Christmas time. That way all your family is around soon after to make the announcement. I will probably end up announcing it via email (or, not at all and just let my mom and Grandma spread the word heh). But like I said... I don't want to wait for Christmas so I'm a-ok with that!

Wow, you guys have such incredible stories!!

@samisomsam, so cute. @legalbee, omg that kills me! Too funny. @CEO528, I LOVE IT!! And the cat...priceless!! @alundberg, That pic is exactly what I was talking about! How perfect!! @floridabeachbride, I'm with crebre80, from the story it sounds like everyone was crying out of how sweet it was that he managed to get the guts to go through with it, and that he was struggling to do his best, despite his stage-fright. Although I must say, the lack of romantic words thing got me thinking... my SO might have trouble being his normal romantic self in front of others like that, since he can be shy in front of a group. But cinemaparadiso makes a GREAT point...

And @ankile, that is so great!! You totally get it then... even though we already have what would seem like a great backdrop for an engagement, being near loved ones would be even more special. And the snow?! I can only wish... :)

I don't know, I definitely see the good in both a semi-public and a private proposal (@texaslawgirl, having it be our little "secret," that's a cool thought). I don't know if I can expect it this Christmas, but I think I am really starting to like the thought of that!

I don't know that I'd like to get engaged in front of family and friends for some reason.  My BF isn't coming for Christmas, he's going to stay with his father here and I'll be traveling to see my own family in the midwest.  But he did mention something about getting engaged at his relative's wedding reception, which would be terrifying for me! ha!

I would love a Christmas proposal. I think we're going to see his family, 13 hours away for Christmas. That would be so perfect if he proposed at the hotel, just the two of us and then his family would get to celebrate with us! They miss out on so much since we're so far away. It would be cool to share that with them.

it's so funny that you ladies say that you would be blushing or cringing and what not. FI's mom told him he should purpose to me when we were at a Christmas Dinner with his family. Of course it didn't happen there but it did happen that night instead. He told me he wanted to wait till we were alone but I know that he just doesn't like to have everyone staring at him like that:)
