I'm sorry you will be missing an important person on your big day, but like you said, it's for a worthy opportunity. At least you know he was not purposefully missing it!
Same thing happened to me - my best guy friend couldn't afford the trip. Major bummer. Trust me when I say that you'll still have a blast, though. It's good that you are finding out now, so you have some time to react and get happy again :-).
Aw. Maybe you can give him a call when you're primping that morning and he can cheer you on?
The exact same thing happened to me, and it still stings. I can't really offer advice, but know that you aren't alone in this rotten experience.

One of my best male friends in the world just called me this morning and told me he cannot attend my wedding now. And while it's for a wonderful opportunity for him (new job training in ATL) and I am happy he found a new job (was miserable at old job), I've always pictured him at my wedding...and now it's not going to happen.
He was almost in the wedding and now I'm kind of glad that didn't pan out because 17 days out and that would've sucked.
I am happy for my friend but am bummed and emotional about him not being there on Oct. 29th.
