No weird comments for me (I've got an awesome support team I guess) but I just have to say Monique L'Huillier is ANYTHING but Cute! I think that gown is absolutely stunning. And, I'm going to go out on a limb from seeing other posts, a lot of ladies here will agree with me and be sweetly jealous about your dress. I know a lot of lace dresses look the same and I love that your's has such unique touches to it!
LOVE IT
Also, Welcome to Weddingbee :)
love the dress. it's gorgeous, but preppy at the same time (maybe that's what they mean by cute?) my sister said my wedding gown looked like a bath towel randomly wrapped around me - how's THAT for offensive? just went for my 1st fitting - my friends see that it's TOTALLY me. my fam prob still thinks i could do better but have learnt to shut up.
I love it! I think it's beautiful! I can see how the word "cute" might throw you off, but maybe they didn't mean it as "cutesy" cute -- more like a STUNNING cute!
I think "sweet" or "romantic" would be a bit more accurate than "cute" -- but I agree with the above comments, that "cute" didn't mean "appropriate for a five-year-old."
I agree with the others. The dress is FABULOUS and cute really isn't appropriate for describing that dress. Don't worry about what others think of the dress. If you LOVE it... Own it!
Oh my god, that dress is absolutely stunning!! I would never describe it as cute - cute to me means poofy, younger bride. This is something a celebrity would wear, beautiful dress congrats!!
I think it's gorgeous!!! Do you have any pictures of you in it? I love the sweetheart neckline, the lace edging at the bottom and the belt... love it!
I agree...I wouldn't ever use "cute" to describe that dress...and I could see myself also being a little thrown by the "cute" compliment. Your dress is gorgeous!!!! The lace gives it a romantic feel while the fit adds a hint of sexiness! Great choice...be sure to post pictures after the big day!
Some people just say "cute" for everything. I know I say cute in reference to makeup, clothes, animals, home decor, etc. etc. It's just a word I use a lot.
That dress is not cute meaning like teddy bears or three year olds. It's a gorgeous dress and I'm sure everybody agrees. They're just probably like me and use the word cute excessively ;o)
I think that's a lovely, romantic dress. Cute isn't exactly the word I'd use to describe it.
After seeing the photo of my dress (and me in it), my MIL kept saying how "interesting" and "different" my dress was. It kind of bothered me, as if I were wearing something crazy and ridiculous. I knew she didn't like the dress, but she was too passive agressive to admit it. Of course, on the wedding day, she told me all about how she didn't like the dress when she saw it in photos and she thought I made a huge mistake. She said that she liked it better in person, but I was still totally annoyed.
I told my aunt once that her new tahitian black pearl (from bf #200) was "cute" and she REAMED me for it. I liked the setting! I thought its swirly design was really cute. I also know she's a gold digger and therefore was all "whatev" about it, lol
Oye. WHO KNEW! i agree, maybe cuz it's preppy? Or just b/c its not their perception of a wedding dress (big and poffy) but man i really like it! Romantic for sure.
I am guilty of using the cute word.. Until I looked on this board I had no idea that some people were offended when the word cute is used (I try to be careful now that I know!)... I am sure they didn't mean little girl cute.. it's a beautiful dress.
Hah, i agree that some people say "cute" for everything. In fact, my sister says it's "cute" when a song she likes comes on the radio!
Anyway, I also agree that "sweet" may be the word to use instead of "cute". There is definitely a sweet appeal to it. It's totally stunning, but not overly "sexy", and it's also not a typical poofy wedding gown - maybe that's where "cute" came from. Either way, it's a gorgeous dress, don't question it!
I use the word cute sometimes to mean a sweet and sassy mix. That certainly describes the dress. I doubt the person saying cute meant it in the "twee" sense.
sounds like you are fishing for compliments ;) it's a very lovely dress!
I would also guess that they just overuse the word "cute" to mean pretty, nice, they like it. The dress is not "cute" in any sort of "childish" way. I like it a lot!
Girl, I would give my left (and maybe right) arm for that dress.... no matter what people called it. :o) You are going to look amazing! If it helps, saying someone looks 'super cute!' is a very high accolade among my group of friends. This is a term we even use for 4" platform heels, which I would shudder to see an adolescent girl running around in. I would think back to how they said it-- was it enthusiastic or lack-luster? If they were excited, I wouldn't give it a second thought.
I think your dress is so pretty!! People just throw around the word "cute"--I've heard it applied to random things that were decidedly more-than-cute. I think it's a usage thing: wrong word, wrong time. Don't worry though, you'll look gorgeous on your wedding day!
The dress is fab! Don't let the word "cute" throw you off.
When I showed a friend my dress, she said "It's very 'you.'" I thought, WTH does that mean?!? I'm still wondering...... ???
I am one of those people who tend to overuse the word "cute" for things I like (I'm working on it). Your dress is gorgeous and I'm sure they meant "cute" as a compliment.
Oh I've seen that dress before and my word of choice would be "gorgeous"! For me "cute" would be a little strange for me too so I understand, but I wouldn't let that bother you. Know that your dress is amazing and very special. Rock it girly!!
I agree with everyone, its a goregous dress and you will look amazing in it! I have no idea why they would call it cute but dont take offense!
Well, I am not lucky enough to have found "my" dress just yet. Still on the hunt. :)
I think that dress is absolutely stunning! People do tend to overuse certain words like "cute" or "interesting". I once had an English teacher that would not allow us to use the word "interesting" in our papers. She said find a nother adjective, there are plenty! Anyway, I am sure they didn't mean anything bad by it. You also have to remember, they have not looked at thousands of wedding dresses like we have. They are not the bride deep in planning so they do not think about the adjectives they use. I'm sure you will get that comment from them on a lot of other things.
Do not second guess that dress! It is gorgeous!
Wow, thanks so much for all the support! I know my bridesmaid and FMIL weren't trying to offend me, I was just thrown off by the cute comment. But I feel so much better now that I've got that off my chest! Thanks again everyone for the sweet comments! Happy wedding planning!
I know you've had a lot of replies but let me ask you one question:
When you have that dress on, do you feel completely amazing? Does your face beam? Do you feel like a princess? If you love your dress, who cares what people think or say. I understand where you're coming from but they aren't wearing it, you are.
I'm sure you're going to look amazing! The dress is gorgeous.
Gorgeous dress!
I think the word cute was only used as a compliment. I would use words like stunning, classy, elegant, timeless, beautiful, before I'd say cute..
:) congrats on a great dress! I love it!
Fabulous dress!

Hi Ladies,
Recently, I showed my wedding dress to my bridesmaid. She said it was cute. My FMIL said the same thing. I don't know why that bothers me because it's not an insult by any means. I always though cute is a word to describe maybe a short dress? My dress is monique lhuillier "jessica" http://www.projectwedding.com/blog/2008/10/03/monique-lhuillier-in-our-real-wedding-of-the-week/

Now I'm second guessing my dress! I feel embarrassed that that kind of compliment would even bother me but I just had to say it!
Have any of you experienced comments about your dress that bothered you?
