I had an ethics class meeting right after this happened. I kept my mouth shut because I really didn’t know what to say. A girl next to me said that these acts are usually middle easterners, but white people only do things like this when they have mental problems! I was so shocked by that statement I really had no idea what to think. I mean my first thought that it was also a white male. I’m just going to go with the fact that it just happened, and we should be wishing that no one had done it really!

I guess I get what he’s saying.

If the bomber is a white American, the bomber will be punished and that will be that. We will not start suspecting all white Americans of terrorism, or suggesting that white Americans not be allowed in the country, etc.

If the bomber is just about anything but a white American, we will likely continue to make grand and terrible assumptions about all people who happen to fall into the same racial and national category as the bomber.

So, white American –> the bomber is punished. Non-white and/or non-American –> an entire group is punished.

@MrsDrRose612:  I think it IS racist but more against middle eastern people than white people.  “let’s spare THOSE people MORE stereotyping, because lets face it, THEY have a habit of blowing people up.” = racist.

at the same time though a white guy is probably the only demographic that isn’t going to perpetuate a culture of fear that adds to the racist stereotyping of minorities.  people probably aren’t going to start harassing white men if a white guy committed the bombing, but unfortunately i don’t think the same is true if it were a minority person.  it just seems like a weird comment to make in a reputable publication.

Another way to interpret it is this way: Usually when a white American does soemthing like this, it is an isolted incident, and it is less likely to be related to a larger more powerful terrorist organization, and a domestic isolated incident would obviously be easier to handle than a possible string of terrorist activities committed by a huge foreign group.

I mean I understand what he is saying I guess. Was it stupid to publish? Probably, but I’ve heard much more offensive things said about the subject.

When a white guy does something: “What’s wrong with him??”

When ANYONE ELSE does something: “What’s wrong with those people?”

So yeah, I can see why someone would say that.

Eh, I just hope they arrest whoever it is and that justice gets served.
