I had a very long day of work, but was excited to hand out Halloween candy. The little kids are so cute. While waiting around, my roommate asked me when I thought boyfriend would propose. I said "Oh, tonight, or maybe my birthday next week." She asked, "Why tonight? It's Halloween?" I said, "Because it's Halloween. He loves Halloween."
Unfortunately, I underestimated the number of kids and I ran out of candy early; the last few received TLC granola bars. (Sorry!) So I darkened the lights and hid from would-be trick-or-treaters. Then my next-door (literally) neighbors, who were having a small party, invited me over for a drink, despite that I wasn't in costume.
While I was at the neighbor's, boyfriend very covertly unpacked four carved jack-o-lanterns and quickly lit them. He then rang the doorbell about six times before my roommate, who was also hiding from trick-or-treaters, answered. My roommate called me and asked me to come over IMMEDIATELY - I thought our house was being vandalized or something.
I stepped onto my neighbor's front porch and knew. My boyfriend was standing on my front lawn with four seemingly blank pumpkins and a huge, nervous smile. He talked about some shared experiences that we had, turned each pumpkin around one at a time to reveal the carved word - Wlll, You, Marry, Me? - got down on one knee, presented me with a vintage 1940s ring (more or that later), and asked me to marry him.
I said, "Yes."
So that's the story of how we got engaged. Of the million times that I have retold the story, 90% of women are appalled that he proposed on Halloween, until I say the part about the carved pumpkins. I thought it was very cute and a true reflection of us. :)
