I cannot decide anything related to our wedding cake. I know I want one and FI stipulated that it not have fondant and we want it to taste great, but I can't figure out a cake I like. I haven't told anyone (besides FI) because I'm the baker in the family...I should have no problem with this! Grrr! Sorry, just had to vent a little over this because I can't even come up with a basic design or if I want round or square tiers or anything...

Try googling for your color or theme type cakes to get some ideas.

I've tried. I just can't seem to get attached to any design. I guess when I look at cakes I can't just go "that's the cake I want at my wedding".

I ended up taking different elements from different cakes and putting those together.

Have you ever thought about doing cupcakes, multiple small cakes, or cheesecake? You don't always have to go with just any old tier wedding cake.

Could you do several tiers, with each one a little different? (i.e., different cake types, frosting types, designs, etc.)

Also, if you haven't scheduled any tastings yet, you should---they will help with a lot of this. At each of the ones we went to, they had big books of cakes they'd done and had us flag cakes we liked various elements of, and then walked us through how those could be combined in various ways to create something unique. It becomes a lot clearer in that context. And knowing you don't want fondant helps a lot; certain designs and shapes are only possible if you're using fondant, so you can skim right past those. Good luck!

my mom is a baker and i had seen so many wedding cake that is was impossible for me to choose a style of cake so we decided it to go with different cakes, cheesecakes and cookies. is going to be like a dessert bar. only one of the cake will have the topper.

Those are all good ideas. We're already having a groom's cake and a dessert bar, so I really want a semi-traditional or traditional wedding cake and I have a really cute topper to go with it. I'll definitely have to set up some tastings soon-ish though so I can get a better idea.

Toffee:  I agree that you may need to just find types of cakes that you like and then go from there.  I think deciding round or square is probably one of the last decisions (unless you feel really strongly against one or the other).  I think you have to decide the look of the cake before finalizing the shape.
