Try googling for your color or theme type cakes to get some ideas.

I ended up taking different elements from different cakes and putting those together.

Have you ever thought about doing cupcakes, multiple small cakes, or cheesecake? You don’t always have to go with just any old tier wedding cake.

Could you do several tiers, with each one a little different? (i.e., different cake types, frosting types, designs, etc.)

Also, if you haven’t scheduled any tastings yet, you should—they will help with a lot of this. At each of the ones we went to, they had big books of cakes they’d done and had us flag cakes we liked various elements of, and then walked us through how those could be combined in various ways to create something unique. It becomes a lot clearer in that context. And knowing you don’t want fondant helps a lot; certain designs and shapes are only possible if you’re using fondant, so you can skim right past those. Good luck!

Toffee:  I agree that you may need to just find types of cakes that you like and then go from there.  I think deciding round or square is probably one of the last decisions (unless you feel really strongly against one or the other).  I think you have to decide the look of the cake before finalizing the shape.
