hmmm is it that your craving something salty??? maybe your iron is low or something? lol. either that or it could just be a weird craving with nothing related to your health.... the only thing i would worry about like u said is the sodium intake. too much is not good.
I'm not pregnant, but I've eaten a jar of pickles in a week...I do it all the time. :) It's probably not the healthiest thing in the world because of all the sodium, but I've been eating pickles like it's going out of style my whole life, and I've never had any adverse reactions!
mmm... pickles are totally my pms food. Probably a little high in sodium, but once in a while won't kill you.
You could try to make your own as well which would help limit the sodium in there! Just get a good jar, some cucumbers, and vinegar!
I've eaten a jar of pickles in a day when I wasn't pregnant. The only thing I would be worried about is the salt?
I'm pregnant and totally have the cliche pickle craving. I ate a jar of pickles in one day. I think if you don't do it that often you'll be fine, and as others mentioned, be aware of the sodium. Also, if you have a strong craving, it's usually your body telling you that you need a certain kind of food or nutrient.
On TV the other day they were saying pickle cravings could mean you were low on vitamins and minerals (guessing sodium is all)? They didn't explain it, though. I mostly craved things like blueberry muffins early on, but now I'm a total oink with 2 weeks to go.
I know I am chronically low on sodium and iodine- which is why I put a ridiculous amount of salt on my food and will go to the kitchen, shake salt onto my hand, and lick it off. Until my doctor confirmed that I was low on salt, I avoided salting anything (based on the common myth that salt is bad for you - it varies from person to person.) I imagine if you are craving pickles (craving, not just thinking they'd taste good), you need the salt and other nutrients in them.
I LOVE pickles, I could sit and eat a jar in a day (not pregnant). I could also sit and eat entire package of oreos. My thinking is that its better to eat the pickles rather than the cookies.
Nothing wrong with eating a lot of pickles. I tend to be a believer that your body tells you what it needs. Drink extra water to compensate for the extra sodium.
I'm not pregnant and I've eaten a jar of pickles in 1 day. I have a serious pickle habit and am obsessed with them. I have slowed down a bit but I still eat a jar a week at least.
"when you realized that pickles are actually vegetables" - haha!
a good alternative (IMO) is slicing up cucumbers or cutting cucumber sticks and sprinkling them with or soaking them in vinegar... you can add salt to taste - still sodium but a much more controlled intake.
@stephanie63087: Yes, I like salty things and haven't been eating nuts or sunflower seeds for awhile.
@cardigan: "eating it like it's going outta style" :)
@caszos: homemade pickles, now that's an idea...less salt, yes!
@mrstilly: I know, right, what a cliche!! That's the part that bugs me the most! :)
@cannotwait: Oooh blueberries are a super food so that's a good thing.
@cyneswith: NOw there's an idea...maybe I am low on salt (though the dr. never mentioned it) but I've always enjoyed salty foods throughout my life
@june42011: Wow, a jar in a day! That's some pickle lovin'.
@Scottielass: Good reminder to balance with water intake!
@flamingred:, @SapphireSun: I wonder if it has to do with our hormones, if we're not pregnant.
@invalid_username: yes, I was craving milk at first but then it turned to milkshakes (full ice cream ones) so I agree, I'd better lean toward the healthier cravings.
@Soon2beeMrsM: You are the Queen of the Pickles...even when not pregnant!
Hmmmm.... my husband can eat a jar of pickles in one sitting... maybe I should have him pee on a stick ;)
@june42011: haha, i'm sure you got some by now
@lemondrop:
Yah, I'd be concerned about him. ;)
Last night I asked hubby to get me a slab of mozarella and some pickles before going to sleep. He looked at me and said: now that's pregnancy food...and then he took a picture of me happily snacking in bed.
I was all over the pickles in my first trimester! But beware of the salt in your third trimester. You'll blow up like a balloon! LOL
I tried to always eat a banana every morning. It has potassium and potassium helps keep your sodium levels in check. That seemed to help me. (And baby LOVED her some bananas, LOL!)
I'm not sure if there's any nutritional value to what I've been craving or if it's too early really feel cravings and I'm just having a weird week but this past week I have been all over horseradish, adding it to sandwiches and buying a huge stock of wasabi peas. I've also made snowballs for dessert most days or gone out to get one or if I didn't get one thought about the next day I'd make sure to get/make a snowball.

Is eating a jar full of pickles in one week normal? harmful?
I never wanted to be one of those pregnant people with food cravings but man, when I realized that pickles are actually vegetables (cucumbers) I bought them and haven't looked back. My veggie intake hasn't been the greatest. Anyone find themselves eating unusual things just to get some nutritional value or respond to a craving? BTW, I know those with high blood pressure or sodium issues should not be eating a lot of pickles.
