That ring is ABsolutely Fabulous Fabulous Fabulous!! I love it!!! You lucky girl! If we couldn't afford a diamond I would be so so happy with that! :)
I have a non-traditional ring and I love it to death...if I couldn't have a good 5 carat diamond then I didn't want one...and we're not that well off so I wasn't getting that!
I love amethyst and would love it as an engagement ring (then again at this point I'd take scrunched up tinfoil--not even shiny side out). I can see precious stones other than diamonds gaining popularity presently. Aside from being more affordable (which is always a great thing), they can have a special meaning to the engaged couple and allow brides to express individuality with color if they like.
I love it. I definitely don't think that an e-ring has to be a diamond. My only question would be, how will you get a wedding band on with it? Is the setting high?
Thanks for your lovely comments! Amazingly, we spent 1/20th the cost of our wedding (we are on a $10,000 wedding budget). Thus, leaving us more to spend on a down payment on a future house...
I have a sapphire ering. There are a couple of threads around here about colored stones, like this one: http://boards.weddingbee.com/topic/non-diamond-engagement-rings
P.S. My dad's family has an old bishops ring as the family engagement ring. I believe it's a 3+ carat amethyst with a wide gold band. It's beautiful!
whatever my fi gave me would have been my favorite ring ever! it just happened to be a diamond. but i would have said yes and been thrilled to wear anything.
Thanks for the link ErinMarguerite! Your dad's family ring sounds amazing!
I have a non-diamond engagement ring, because, well, it was my dream ring and I adore it. :)

Oh my goodness that ring is gorgeous!! I fluctuate between the "different" rings and a solitaire! It's awful being indecisive!! Guess I'll love whatever Cam gives me, though!
Yes! I have a sapphire engagement ring, I love it! No offense meant to anyone, but I think diamonds are kinda boring and I want some color in mine.
I have a non-diamond engagement ring, and I love it. It's a mystic topaz in a beautiful setting, and I get a lot of comments and compliments on it because it is such an unsual ring.
I have a mystic topaz too (it's heart shaped pendant). It is definitely unusual and a conversation piece. Congrats!
Maybe. It depends if I found something I like more than diamonds and if DH couldn't have afforded one. If he couldn't jhave bought me a diamond I'd have gone for something else, but I really just LOVE diamonds. They are so pretty and sparkly. I love them on other people though...they have such zing!
Thats a gorgeous e-ring. I love the options available with non diamond rings.
I really want a non traditional ring but my FI gave me his mothers engagement ring....which was extremely sweet and touching..
If you love it then go for it. I have an emerald for an engagement ring - love, love, love it!
I don't have a non-diamond, but I totally considered it. I could have seen myself wearing a cool sapphire or aquamarine. He picked a diamond and I love it, but I would have been happy either way.
i have a non-diamond e-ring. i didn't want my fiance to spend a fortune and go into debt to get me an e-ring. we're both grad students right now and i would much rather see him put the money he has saved into buying a new car for himself, because he needs one. my stone is a 1 ct. white sapphire and it's gorgeous and i love the setting the most.
i've realized that it seems like a lot of people expect a diamond as an engagement ring, but in reality why should it make a difference as long as you are happy with the ring? there have been times where i have told my fiance that i wish i had asked for a diamond, but mainly it's because i look on here and see some girls posting about their diamonds and i get the typical female jealousy thing going on. sometimes i get a pity thing happening when i tell people that my ring is not a diamond, like my fiance must not love me because he didn't buy me a diamond. i guess the hardest part of not having a diamond is feeling like you have to explain yourself when people ask to see your ring. other than that i wouldn't change my ring choice in a million years.
My e-ring is a black diamond and I couldn't love it more. 99% of the people that I know have said how perfectly they think it suits me. There was only one person who was rude about it (she actually rolled her eyes at it an and told me "you always have to be different") but everyone else was super understanding and supportive of my decision. I actually chose it myself, since FI has a hard time even choosing socks =) Both my wedding band and the fiance's have black diamonds. They're awesome.
I've never been a diamond girl - I prefer color, especially sapphires and aquamarines. It took a lot of convincing to get that across to my guy, he had assumed that diamonds were the only option for engagement rings!

My fiance proposed with a small diamond (my birthstone) in a modern setting that his family helped me nickname "Chip." We found a ring that's more my style -- vintage style, cushion cut stone, and it's an amethyst surrounded by diamonds. What do you think? Would you ever consider a non-traditional engagement ring? Interestingly, sapphires and rubies were once common for e-rings.
