If he’s investing in a tux, he’s probably going to have it tailored anyways.  As long as the shoulder measurements fit, everything else can be adjusted!

I agree with you though–I can’t imagine 5-7 lbs affecting the measurements of someone who is 6’1″.  5 lbs barely impacts my measurements, and I’m 5’3″!

FI bought a suit that was literally 5 sizes too big (“but it was on sale!”) and his tailor did an AMAZING job rebuilding it to fit him.

So I think a few inches here or there might not be a problem for a good tailor. 🙂

I agree I think he’ll be fine ordering now and getting tailored once he reaches his goal weight. Might not make a difference anyway at his height. I’m 5′ 8″ and while losing 10 lbs is noticable, all my clothes are still the same size after losing that much…it doesn’t always make enough of a difference to change clothing sizes.

@wabanzi:  A good tailor can fix the tux once he’s reached  his goal weight!

Yup, I’m 6′ tall and I fluctuate 5-7 pounds all the time, it makes no difference in my clothes.

My FI is a little over 6’1,” 180-185 and can easily fluctuate 5 pounds with absolutely no size/appearance effect. He’ll be fine!

@wabanzi:  I think he should wait, but not so long that he is panicking.  You will get more knowledgeable advice at http://www.styleforum.net – probably already threads on the subject if you search for them.

He should also read this from front to  before deciding on what he wants:

@wabanzi:  My FI is getting his tux, he bought a month ago and he hasn’t got his measurement yet. The tailors suggested to get alteration near the wedding. As 5-7 lbs won’t change his size, he can get a tux now and get the fitting near the wedding.

@wabanzi:  Only issue could be if he is doing weights training in conjunction with his weight loss and building muscle. My FI was going to buy a tux for the wedding and we went to try some one and found he was practically the exact right size for this particular tux with only alterations required to sleeve length. Went back like 3-4 months later and tried the same size on in the same tux again and because he had been doing more weights training his shoulders/back was now too big for that jacket size but the pants were still the correct ft.  You couldn’t purchase the jacket and trousers separately to get the right size in each one (at Hugo Boss, anyway) so we would have had to go up a size which required a fair bit of alterations.

@Lollybags:  VERY good point!  This coul change, not only his chest size, but his shoulder size too.  Adjsting shoulders is a very expensive alteration, and rarely comes out as good as it was. If you do end up having to do this, make sure you find the BEST tailor in town. If you live in a small town, the BEST tailor in the nearest city.
