A question for anyone with PCOS

Mine didn’t suggest anything either way. I went off the pill four months before TTC because I wanted to know whether I’d be cycling regularly or whether I’d need Clomid. I’ve read that sometimes women with PCOS are more fertile right after going off the pill, but my doctor didn’t have a strong opinion either way.

If you type PCOS in the search bar on the right you will see a lot of past posts of women with similar stories/answers. Maybe they might be helpful?

My OB told me a few months. It took 3-4 months off BCP before we were trying, and got preggo on the first cycle.

@BellJarBride:  Im going to discuss this with my doctor in about two weeks! We’re planning on TTC in the next few months or so and I’m debating going off sooner rather than later so my cycles can regulate. I’ll keep you posted if I discover anything worth while

My Dr. Suggested about 2-3 mo. before.  Of course, I went off it 6 months ago and AF has yet to make an appearance, so…I’d recommend going off of it way in advance just in case.

My RE said to start trying right away and that some women have a “sweet” period, of 2-3 months, where their ovaries function normally prior to everything going whacko again.

I didn’t have a “sweet” period, my RE got me to wait for 4 months and then started intervention.

@FMM:  I’m curious if your RE said anything else about that “sweet” period? Like why that happens?

@SeaTurtle88:  I’m not sure if the reason for the “sweet” period is well understood or not. My understanding is that while you are on birth control your ovaries do not produce any hormones because they are being supplied orally. Once your stop BC your ovaries start hormone production.

Usually women with PCOS have a FSH/LH imbalance which results in follicles being produced but they don’t get released from the ovary (hence we don’t ovulate).

Why there are a few months where the hormones are not imbalanced I don’t know. Maybe the build up of follicles (cysts) on the ovaries contribute to the imbalance… I don’t know just a thought.

All I know is that my RE told me that because I had PCOS (to the extent that I was ammennorheic) that I couldn’t be like most couples who go off the pill and NTNP for awhile. She said that we needed to actively try and soon as we went off.

Obviously, this didn’t work for me – I didn’t conceive until 2.5 years and many fertility treatments later.

I’m sorry that I can’t answer your question more clearly. Do you have an RE, or are you working with a GP/OB? ETA: Sorry just re-read that you are waiting to get in with an RE.

@FMM:  yeah haven’t seen an RE or anything yet. I had 4 perfect cycles coming off the pill in July and then big fat nothing. Just had bloodwork and an ultrasound to see what’s going on but haven’t heard back from my Ob yet, ultrasound was to see if there was anything PCOS-like. Was just saying in another thread, my dr wasn’t all that concerned that I’m on cycle day 94 and when I showed him my charting, to show that I haven’t ovulated he was kind of dismissive of charting in general, saying eh you can’t really tell you didn’t ovulate from that. Just wasn’t a great experience, guess I wanted him to take my concern a little bit more seriously. Someone else suggested I just go find an RE so I’m going to see what he says about my lab results and then decide from there.

ETA: unfortunately we weren’t trying during those 4 perfect cycles 🙁 but are trying now, though it seems somewhat pointless

@SeaTurtle88:  Wow, it totally sounds like you had a “sweet period”. I definitely would try and get in with an RE, your doc doesn’t really sound like he knows what he is talking about. Although, my RE made me wait four months after going off the pill before she tried anything.

But because you had a sweet period, I wouldn’t be surprised if an RE puts you back on the pill for a couple months and then takes you off again and gets you to actively try. I would have prefered if I could have conceived without taking all the meds I had to take!
