I'm worried about this too! But I already have the dress and am getting married in 3 weeks, so there's no turning back for me. The mermaid style was most flattering to my figure so I went with it.
Sorry I can't give you any advice yet...but I can let you know in about a month : )
The wedding is this Saturday, I'll definitely let you know!! I'm guessing I'm not really going to be able to sit very well, tho.
I had a trumpet dress and I was fine. I could sit, dance, move perfectly. But I think if I had a smaller size on, I wouldn't have been as comfortable. The salon suggested a size 6, but I went with an 8 instead and it was perfect. I was so comfortable, nothing was tight.
I originally wanted a mermaid dress, but when I tried one on, it was over for me! I couldn't even step off the freakin' pedestal.
You should probably try it on and see how it works for you ;o)
I agree with lara bee. I think it depends on the size of the dress and the way it is tailored. I've definitely tried on some that were constricting, and others that I would have no problem with. Not all mermaid dresses are created equal :) The trumpet dress doesn't come back in at the knees like a mermaid, so you shouldn't have a problem with trumpet.
Oh I've tried on several. ^_^ The mermaid style is the most flattering on me, I think, but not all of the samples were the exact right size (ain't that the way?). I'm actually narrowed down to 2 dresses, both mermaid, and the sample that fit me was pretty comfortable, but I wanted to ask for any real life experiences. ^_^
@SpinningJenny: I'm also a runner so I have disproportionately large thighs! That may have caused a little bit of the problem ;o)
@hotchildinthecity: I wish I could blame mine on being a runner. Mine's probably more of a case of loving bread and beer too much...^_~
I wore a mermaid dress to my senior prom (about three years ago) and it was a tight mermaid dress at that. I had no problem sitting, dancing, breathing, eating, being comfortable, and looking great! I think you'll be fine! I even went to an arcade after prom and played DDR in my dress..
I'm going to attach a picture of my dress so you can get an idea of the fit.. disregard the myspaceyness of them.. what can I say, I went to high school smack in the middle of 'the myspace generation'
@Stassney: Oh wow, killer prom dress! And I love that you played DDR in it--I have DDR for PS1 at home. ^_^ Thanks, that's really reassuring!
As long as it isn't tailored down to be too small around the thighs/knees you will be OK. It's still a bit awkward sitting, you have to do more of a 'perch' but it's not too bad.
I have a mermaid dress and it fits perfectly. That said, I'm worried about a seam ripping while I'm dancing or something! I had my seamstress take out the side hem a little bit so its not quite as restricting. My fitting's on Saturday, so we'll see then! Here's a pic of a model in my dress.
Also, I think it depends on the material of the dress.
I had a trumpet dress & wouldn't even try on mermaid dresses. (I didn't even want to try on trumpet at first, as I was convinced I wanted an A-line) I had no problem at all w/ the trumpet dress, and it even had a lot of boning...of course, they didn't fit it to be super tight.
Mine was a trumpet style in silk satin No problems with sitting, dancing, or being comfortable!
I wore my mermaid on Saturday and yes, I had a bit of a hard time sitting. Not that I couldn't, but it wasn't very comfortable to do so. I certainly couldn't have sat for very long (not that you do on your wedding day, anyway). We took pics before the ceremony, and I'm glad we did, because I changed back out of it for about an hour before the ceremony started - I needed to eat and sit! I didn't try to go to the bathroom while in it, but I have no idea how I would have, to be honest. I just didn't need to, thankfully. I didn't have any problems dancing at all.
Layla and Erin, can I just say how GORGEOUS both of you were on your wedding days?? I want more!!
Oooh, such pretty dresses here~ I'm really curious to hear more mermaid-wearing experiences!
Mine is a mermaid, too, but I've only tried on the sample so far. It was a few sizes up, so they clipped the back, including behind my knees. And everytime I bent down, the clips would pop off!! Heehee, that might have been a warning sign that I won't be able to bend in it...but I'll see how it fits when it comes in!
So I kind of want to bring this thread back, specifically asking if any Catholic brides wore a trumpet or mermaid gown and how that worked out with the "Catholic Calisthenics" (you know, sit, stand, kneel, etc.). I haven't really started dress shopping yet, but I like the way a lot of trumpet gowns look so I was just curious what other people thought about them.
I'm getting married in a mermaid style gown. It's not too difficult to walk around in, but for dancing I've opted for a reception dress. It's much more comfortable and will be easy to have fun in :)
@suckapunch: I haven't had my wedding yet (I am a Cotholic bride), and the mermaid/trumpet style was the way to go for me and my figure. So flattering! I tried on the exact size sample trupmet/mermaid dress in store that I have ordered. I stayed in the dress for about and hour before I decided to buy it. I literally walked, went up and down steps, sat, stood, kneeled, etc, etc. It is a corset back so I really think that makes a HUGE difference versus a zipper.
Also, all these dresses are made so different. Depending where the drop and the flare line is located on each dress determines a lot. Some were so tight around my thigh area I felt like I had to "baby-step" everywhere! lol
This is the link to my dress: http://www.sotteroandmidgley.com/dress.aspx?style=JSM1307
It is SUPER comfortable and so freakin' flattering! I love Maggie dresses, she really knows how to design with a woman in mind. :o)

Did you find it hard to bend or sit in your lovely mermaid or trumpet dress? What about dancing? I love the look and am strongly leaning towards one, but I worry a little about being uncomfortable. Your thoughts? Experiences?
Many thanks! :)
