Hi,
I think there's no normal number. The number you are able to give them.
When I shoot a wedding I take aproximately 1500 photos, after erasing those I think there are not good or double shoot whiwh are uninteresting, etc etc I have around 800 photos.
So I always tell to brides and grooms that I give the maximum best photos as possible but I can't give them a number cause it depends of the wedding, the situation etc. And if they absolutely want a number I tell us 500 minimum cause I've never done a wedding under 500 photos.
I personally believe {and was formally educated} that a photographer is only as good as their worst image. I know there are a few posts here on the bee under how many photos. Which you can search for.
In all my years as a wedding photographer I come to learn that will my clients, more isn't always better. It becomes very overwhelming to go through so many images and don't get me started on trying to pick out their favs for albums and such. My FH and I shoot about 3000 images per wedding and we try and get that as close to 600 as possible. This seems to be a magic number for our studio with all being good quality images. It also makes the editing process more manageable and we can get images to our clients faster. We have a two week turn around policy but we also both do this full time. That said, every studio is different and it's up to you to decide what works for you.

@pizzuti, thanks so much for the information - 600 seems like so many, yet so little considering how many we take too! But you're right, it's post-wedding that is the most time consuming. It took me two days just to sort through all the pictures and delete either the bad ones or duplicates, and now trying to edit them. I work full time, since I don't have a photo business yet, so it's hard finding time to do it. This wedding was actually a gift as well, so I feel less pressured to get them their images since I wasn't paid to do it.
Anyway, you had a lot of great pointers, thanks for the help!

Professional meaning, you own your own business, do at least ten weddings a year etc etc.
I am just getting into the business, and just did my second wedding on Saturday.
Now, I'm curious, how many pictures do you actually give to your client for a wedding? I took nearly 2000 pictures, and my assistant took nearly that many. Obviously once you go through them all, edit etc, you have maybe half that.
So I'm wondering what is the normal amount of wedding pictures you give a client (like if you're putting them on a CD for them)?
