Hi! Here’s my question: would it be weird for a parent in law to have a bumper sticker on their car saying something like proud parent of __university student?
The deal is, DH’s parents are getting OU bumper stickers for Christmas this year because they’ve been asking for a while now. Well we can’t think of anything to get my parents this year so I was thinking we could get some for them too. The thing is he’s the only one attending OU and I’ve never heard of anyone doing that before so I don’t know if that’s just not ok or what. How do you feel about it?

I would not like that idea if I were your parents. Why would I want a bumper sticker that says I’m a “proud parent” when I’m not even the parent? “Proud Inlaws of a OU student”? No way. Find them something else. If you gave that to me I’d probably look at you like it was some type of joke…

uh…no. If I were a parent, I wouldn’t put my son/daughter in law’s university sticker on my vehicle. just sayin’.

I would come up with something else! There are a ton of DIY ideas on Pinterest:)

It’s strange. I’m sure you can find something else to do for your parents.

I personally wouldn’t put one of those on my car for my kid, let alone for an inlaw. I guess I feel like those “I’m a proud parent of an X Middle School Honor Student” are supposed to give children a self esteem boost. Adults, on the other hand, don’t need their parent to broadcast it to the world.
That said, what do you think your parents would do? You know them way better than us! My dad would never put a bumper sticker on his car that said “proud parent of a Umich student.” BUT, he did love getting a UofM Dad t-shirt back when we were in college. And I would probably wear a t-shirt saying something like that too. That’s just our temperment though – I feel like bumper stickers are pretty permanent so it has to be something I really like or identify with for me to put it on my car.
Did your parents to go college or have a favorite team? Maybe get them a bumper sticker for that school instead?

@flipflopsandcombatboots: Nah. He’s not their kid and a lot of people don’t like bumper stickers.

No, I don’t think that’s a good idea. You didn’t go there, so why would they have any affiliation with that school? And do you know if they even like bumper stickers – personally I will never put a sticker on my car, I think it ruins them.

@rickhurst35: +1…. i thought people stopped doing that when their kids left elementary school.

It’s weird. I would not recommend it. I’d say find something else.

Very weird – he isn’t their kid, plus those bumper stickers are attention seeking, in my opinion. I would think of something else.

sorry but I think that would be odd. I also hate bumper stickers though so.

@flipflopsandcombatboots: If the parents want to put one, great, but I don’t know if inlaws would really want that.I also don’t like bumper stickers or use them. I would rather have a magnet so it comes off easier with no damage to the car, but that is just me.

No. Bumper stickers are not a gift.

I’d try to come up with something different. Maybe Pinterest can help you get some ideas.
