They are always trying to sell new accounts.  The same thing happened when DH and I went to deposit checks and cash gifts.

Thats to be expected from someone working at the bank, they always want to open as many new accounts as possible

She was just doing her job. Don’t be so hard on her. Besides—why would you NOT want a joint savings account. She’s kinda right…do you have NOTHING to save for?

ETA: You wanted an explanation of the benefits of a joint savings account? It’s a SAVINGS account. With an automatic transfer. The benefits are saving together without having to worry about putting away money manually.

It’s her job.  Most of us have worked in a job where we work off commission or we are trained to say certain things to customers that we don’t really want to, but have to.  Don’t assume she meant a wedding or a ring.  Maybe she meant a vacation, a car, a house, whatever.  You just assume a ring or wedding was on her mind because it was on YOUR mind.  Maybe the woman assumed you were already married or engaged, since most couples that open checking accounts and pay bills together are already married.

@hellopurple: Don’t think of it as a lecture. Think of it as a dose of common sense. The poor girl was just doing her job, and probably very sweet, and you came on the internet to talk about strangling her. MrsTrigger was right. Just because a ring is on YOUR mind doesn’t mean it was on HERS. Basically anything that can be bought with money can be saved up for.

And then you deleted everything? Sad.

I don’t think anyone was trying to give you a lecture, they were just saying that most bank tellers are going to try to upsell and that a lot of people do have something that they’re saving towards. It didn’t necessarily mean a ring or wedding…

I know you dont want a lecture- but I read your post the other day and I think its sad that after so many doubts were in your mind (and totally justified ones in my opinion) you are still willing to risk tying yourself financially to this person.

secondly- yes, its her job to try and open as many accounts as possible.

Oh wow. I just went and re-read the other thread you started. The one Bellanouva is referencing. Yikes. From THAT to THIS? Total 180. On second thought–it’s a good thing you didn’t open the savings account. Just pay off the bills you owe then get out of there.
