A word of advice to everyone: start looking and book your photographer as soon as you get engaged! We aren’t getting married until September 5, 2010 – however EVERY photographer I have contacted is already booked for this day (I have literally contacted 10+ people over the past two weeks)!
After frantically searching all day to find a new photographer (after getting to work this morning and finding out that another was already taken) – we did find a fantastic photographer that we are extremly happy with – but, the anxiety was not worth it.
Hopefully my experience can help some of you out!

I second this. We booked our photographer about 10-11 months before the wedding but he was already getting pretty booked up for the year (especially during the nice weather times like spring and summer).

I also agree – especially the fabulous photographers that your friends use! I found that a ton of them got booked up so early! Good post eupenmalmody!

We booked ours a year out. Even then, there were photogs that were completely booked.
We ended up with our first choice, though.

- Wedding: September 2009 - Barr Mansion
We got married on a Friday, so it wasn’t as much of an issue–but some photographers will only book one wedding per weekend, as we found out, so we were competing with the people getting married on that Saturday, too. Good advice!

Don’t give up – have you asked the photographers you have already contacted if they have referrals and/or suggestions of other photographers?

I booked my date around my photog 🙂

I agree. Photog is the first vendor we booked.

Wow, that’s nuts! Is it Labor Day weekend? Maybe that’s a more popular date!

Yeah, I booked my photographer about 16 months out!

It is the Sunday of Labor Day weekend. I think I should have suspected this would be so difficult when I went to contact my dream venue (on October 19, 2009) only to find out that they had 1 available date ONLY in all of 2010 (they were completely booked up). Luckily, the date (Sept 5th) worked for us so I booked it. They are also almost completely booked for 2011?!
You would never know we are in a recession when it comes to wedding planning, huh?!

We booked a year out, but had to change our date to get our photographer… Luckily we had a long engagement (15 months), so we still had time to choose a venue and decide on style before we had to select a photographer.

We were pretty lucky, we booked our photographer about 6 months out, but we only had a 6 month engagement! Also the photogs are friends of one of our GM’s so they cut us a HUGE deal! But def good advice, if this photog hadn’t come recommended by our GM, I don’t know what we would have done!

We booked our photographer before we had a venue!! We’d picked a date, but were still 14 months away from it, so we were lucky. By the time the wedding rolled around (and one of our groomsmen had booked the same photographer) he was charging 2x’s what we paid.
The early bird gets their choice, and often a better deal!

Good reminder! I am a wedding photographer so I’m totally biased, but this is great advice ESPECIALLY if your have a SATURDAY date. Saturdays are the first dates to go and the photographers who are both good + affordable go fast. As a bride you’ll always have an easier time searching if you have a non-sat. date. If you do have a Sat., book early as save yourself the stress!
