The African American boards are a little...dead. I don't want to reply to threads that were started months ago! So here goes.

I am Miss Tattoo and I'm African American. (cue: everyone says Hi Miss Tattoo like they do in AA meetings.)

I am 27 years old and I am planning a June 2012 wedding in Pittsburgh, PA. I am "engaged" to Mr. Tattoo. He is Irish so we are interracial and intercultural. Our theme? DIY. Once upon a time, the wedding machine had me wrapped around her pinky. I thought I needed a $30k wedding with personalized cocktail napkins, 10 foot tall centerpieces, the best food that everyone would just shit out at the end of the night, and a $6000 dress and a $7000 ring. Oh yes, I had everything planned from 7th grade.

Later in life I found out about the Debeers scam, blood diamonds, and the environmental inpact that mining has on our Earth and I cut them out. We have decided to go with moissanite because of ethical and environmental issues.

Also, one day I came across this blog and when I finished reading it, it changed my life. Seriously. Now our wedding is going to be much more intimate and a lot of things I am doing myself. I have even started writing our ceremony from scratch.

I would like to see other AA brides to get inspiration for hair (I did the BC and I am now rocking a natural fro and sometimes straighten it with a flat iron. SO I guess I'm half/half) makeup (because we all don't look great it pink blush and lipstick) dresses, food, ect.

So there it is. I'm Miss Tattoo and I'm AA. ^_^

Hi, I am trugem! I am a NYD bride. My wedding is in less than 90 days! I have decided to rock a full weave with an insivible part (non of my hair will be left out). It will be easier for me to work with for my honeymoon. Braids don't work for me because my hair is super thick and my head is big. lol I used 3 packs of hair for my kinky twists lol. My hair was too full and it made me look heavy so I will stay away from braids.

My wedding will have a guest list of about 400. We both have large families and it is not uncommon to have hundreds of people at family reunions, so a 400 guest wedding is not really uncommon for our family. Everyone is excited about our wedding because it is on NYD. They want to dress up and wear tuxes. lol Some people are trying to lose weight. lol

We are going to St. Lucia for our honeymoon. We will leave about 2 hours after the wedding. The wedding will end at about 11 and we will head to the airport at around 2am. It sounds crazy, but it works with our time constraints and it costs more to leave a day late.

The only thing that I have diy'ed is my blinged out shoes.

I have never did anything like this and my family thought I couldn't do it (everyone except my FH).

@trugem: Those shoes are AWESOME! Wow! Very nice! Now, if I weren't 5'11 and Mr. Tattoo was a bit taller than 6'2, I would totally rock heels on my wedding day! Maybe I can bling out some flats. ^_^

@Miss Tattoo: Thanks. They are 4 inches. I am 5'8 and FH is 6'2, so I can get away with them. I think blinging out some flats/lower heel would be a great idea.

What are your wedding colors? You can bling them out in those colors.

@trugem: Since our venue is at an outdoor park and mansion, our colors are soft pink and light yellow. I just want gerbera daisies everywhere! It's going to be like a garden party.

I know what you mean about family reunions. My mothers side is huge and so is my father's side. I wanted to keep it below 100, BUT when I made a rough draft I was already at 30! And that was my immediate family and first cousins, aunts, and uncles. lol

All of his family will be flying in from Ireland, NY, and AZ. We plan on an afternoon wedding and reception with a huge afterparty later that night.
Since our venue is a park, we have to be done by 6.

What about your colors? What's your plans so far? You are almost there!

@Miss Tattoo: Pink crystals would look great on your shoes.

My colors are pool, black, silver, and white. I am having a bling theme with touches of damask. I have booked pretty much everything except the videographer. I plan to book someone this week. I will begin working on my candy buffet (which will serve as a favor for my guests).

Our wedding has been a long time coming. We have dated since we were 17 (over 7 years) so this is the BIG event for us and our families. Our wedding is the first wedding in our families a long time. None of our siblings are married and we are the youngest so we are being spoiled a little bit. Everyone is trying to go all out.

@trugem: I love candy buffets! I want one myself. I have been on the look out for apocrathy jars. I'll probaby start collecting them at the beginning of next year. I think they are way better than personalized matchbooks.

    Cheeks11    April 8, 2011   Dallas, TX

Hi! I'm Cheeks11, I'm an AA and I'm from Dallas, Texas! Our wedding is in less than, 6mos and I'm slowly but surely but surely making my way through my DIY list. Our wedding will be small and intimate with about 40 people including the bridal party. Themes I'm incorporating into the wedding are feathers, bling and zebra print, touches of green apple. I know it sounds a little crazy but the total picture will look great...I hopeLaughing My 14 year old son will be walking me down the aisle and my other 2 sons will be ring bearers. We are having a sand ceremony to include the kids and hand ceremony as something special for us.

I'm an encore bride but FI has never had a wedding (2nd marriage for him) and so I'm doing it up for him. I wanted the romantic beach wedding/honeymoon with just the two of us but everytime we talked about our wedding he mentioned having his family and friends there so full blown wedding it is!

So far my DIY projects I've completed are invites, centerpiece mock up, tears of joy packets, sign in table arrangement and escort card mockups. I'm currently working on OOT bags, programs and aisle feather pomanders and gathering items for my cupcakes in a jar favors.

@Miss Tattoo: I would love to also see some inspiration pics of other AA brides hair. I want kind of a side ponytail updo but my hair isn't quite long enough right now. I recently bought some clip on extensions to test the look out and should my hair not be long enough by April 2011 I'll definitely be pulling those bad boys out! lol

@trugem: I loveeee those shoes! I don't even remotely have the patience glue all those crystals on. Excellent job!

    @cheeks: great job!!!!!

    @tru love the shoes!!!

I'm crebre80 and getting married next month (EEEEEE) I am doing a simple sideswept style with curls and wearing a birdcage which was semi diy (bought it from another bride and added a fascinator that I did myself)

I am doing everything myself since I work in the industry. We are having a brunch wedding in a loft overlooking the MS River with abt 70 guests. We will have feathers, chandeliers, and damask and yummy foods!!!

I have just completed the semi-diy for my invites and I adore them...

As far as favors go I am doing damask pens and ornaments that will have our wax seal as well as a candy buffet with some caramel apples....

@Miss Tattoo: Yep they're tissue packets. I've gotten so many new ideas since joining WB. Everyone is so talented and creative. It's so exciting to see everyone's visions come to life. We all understand each other's fragile state of mind during wedding planning. I'm always tell the FI about "my bees". lol

Oh yes, I know what you mean. Before I joined I had this cookie cutter idea of weddings. I never would have dreamed to do ANYTHING myself. Now I have a list and it grows everyday! I just added tissue packs to the list! lol Thanks!

OurWedding    August 13, 2011   South Carolina

Hi! I'm OurWedding! I'm getting married August 13, 11. We are having a photo themed wedding. We both love pictures, A Lot! Our colors are black and white with blue accents. It looks like we are going to have around 200-225 people, and we're doing good bit of DIY. Building our own photo booth, flower girl baskets, ring pillow and some of our centerpieces (with help of family friend who is a florist/decorator). I'm also going to make the accent pillows and cushions for our lounge, OOT bags, guest book, invites, and we are also making our own wine. We've done some test runs on the wine, and it's really good.

We are keeping our budget around $10,000 including our honeymoon to the Dominican Republic. That is with my family gifting us some things.

As far as my hair, I haven't totally decided what the style will look like. Some kind of up-do, but I will probably wearing a lace front wig or micro braids.

I'm glad this thread was started.

    Hello Ladies!

I'm tootietoo2, I'm AA & we're getting married New Year's Day (Hey Truegem, date twin!!). We're doing an "Enchanted Winter Evening" motiff & our colors are midnight & silver. We're older (he's 41, I'm 40) and trying to keep a practical approach to things. We've whittled our guestlist down to 110 people, only 10 are not relatives. We're having a candlelight ceremony in the little church we attend & being married by the pastor, who actually introduced us. We want it very intimate & only have 2 attendants each, 1 jr. bridesmaid, 2 ringbearers & a bellringer. Those will be the only children at our wedding as we want a more elegant adult event (dinner won't even be served until after 8pm so not very kid-friendly.

We've booked all of our vendors except the florist & will have that done next week. We've finalized our menu & the ceremony programs are almost done. Invitations are almost ready to go out, my dress arrived last week & we've picked out almost all of our ceremony music, so I think we're on schedule. FI has been talking about candy buffets lately or perhaps a late night snack of various desserts. I guess we'll decide on that pretty soon.

I answered on truegem's thread about natural hair. I've been natural for more than 20 years & will likely do a roller set & style it half up-half down. All of my jewelry is ready & I hav esome gorgeous blinged out shoes to wear! I do need to work on my veil (my aunt & I are making it) & finalize the bridesmaids' accessories.

So nice to see some other sistahs on the board Smile

@Cheeks11: Hi! Thanks. The shoes took about 2 months or so to complete. I spent from an hour to four hours on them at a time. I took a break for a while and I had to do one shoe in less than 3 weeks so that I could take my bridal pictures.

I love the bling on the invites. I wanted to get those for my wedding, but I found out the box invites started at about $45 each! I have two swarorski crystals on my invites now.

@OurWedding: They would be perfect. I always wanted them, but I don't know if I have the patience to sit there that long to get them done.

So what makeup does everyone wear? Right now I am using Bare Minerals, but want a more polished look for our ceremony. I did use to sell Mary Kay and they have a lot of colors for our skin colors.

    Saokrazie in Love    March 18, 2011   Newark,Nj

    Hi everyone,

My name is Saokrazie.....Mr.Cee and I will be getting married on March 18,2011 in Las Vegas (were from NYC) with nine or maybe ten of our closest friends. We will spend a week there and then head to Tahiti. Because we are having a destination wedding we are doing an engagement party with thirty of our friends and family.....

I HAVE A BLOG AND I HAVE INCLUDED A SNIPPET IF ANYONE WANTS TO READ MORE U CAN MESSAGE ME.

BTW I TRIED MICROBRAIDS AND I DONT LIKE IT, I THINK I WILL GET A LONG WEAVE.

So today me and Mr. Cee decided since we are having a destination wedding that we will have an all in one party....slightly unconventional (I KNOW) before the wedding. Meaning we have bridal shower, reception and engagement party all in one. For those that will not attend our nuptials in Las Vegas. We also  had a to count our peoples that will feel can and can't attend. I am not for the drama before I let someone fuck up my party....I will not invite them....but Mr.Cee is cut from another piece of fabric...before he make a enemy out of his self....he will invite his whole family.Which in a matter of opinion is not exactly cool. His family scrap like a old Jerry Springer episode....and its embarrassing. So I decided to break our 25 into 12 plus and agreeable middle.

So I wonder how our 25 turn in 30, being mindful it will be in our house. We going rent tables, chairs with coordinating colors sashes(our colors-navy).and have a chef come and cook a buffet style dinner. We also will  have a candy buffet done by Couture Candy Buffet..We will have all of the amenities in our large ass apartment. My family will be coming up from Baltimore and his from New York.  We ordered our party invites from Vista print and it had a Vegas theme...they should be here in 21 days(approx). They was a little more expensive then Wedding Paper Divas, where we purchased our actual wedding invites from.

I also want to have a singer come in an sing songs to him it will be a little surprise. I am looking for favors online because I want everyone to leave with something special to make them remember that day....any suggestion?

@trugem: Well the time you spent on the shoes really paid off because they look great. I remember seeing your invites on another post and they look really great as well. I too saw how much the boxed invitations were and decided just to make my own. I really wanted the silk invitation boxes but couldn't wrap my head around paying $60+ per invite and that wasnt including shipping. I have no idea how much its going to be for the invites I made. I'm pretty sure I'll have a postage fee vent around the first of Feb 11. lol

@Cheeks11:Thanks! LOL postage is is going up after the new year. I would stock up on those forever stamps if I were you. I have expensive taste and I found someone local to make the invites to fit into my budget. It is still expensive, but not as bad as it would've been if I would've ordered them in Houston.

@Miss Tattoo: They do increase. If you buy them in 2010 while they are still .44 then they won't lose their value. If you buy them in 2011, they will be the new stamp price but they will never lose their value.

@trugem:I guess I need to wrap a box and take it to the post office to see exactly how much it will be and if I can get stamps in advance. They're not real heavy but I'm sure they're going to take more than a few stamps especially since they're not letter sized. Uggh!

@Miss Tattoo: I was under the impression that the Forever Stamps would always stay the same the price. I know a couple of people that stock up on them just because they knew the post office would raise them again in a year or two.

I guess I better stock up on them now! Remember when stamps were 27 cents? I'm not even that old! Geez! I'm going to get like 400 stamps. That should cover save the dates, invites to showers, parties, and the wedding, rsvp cards (although I hope people go green and do it on our website) and thank you cards. I hope. Maybe 500.

@2shy2Bbf: Can't wait to see them!

plannergirl    November 20, 2010   Richmond, VA

Hello!!  I am plannergirl.  My date is about 40 days away and I am so excited.  I have most of my DIY projects done.  I finally got my guest list down to about 420.  It was pushing 600. OUT OF CONTROL!!!

I am so excited I have a very special aunt making the pillow for the ring bearer.  I have bad news for him, I am keeping it!

I am working on table numbers and baskets for the restrooms now.  Since I will have an open bar, I have decided to put tooth brushes, toothpaste and mouth wash in the restrooms.  This will be in addition to other items.

I did the ultimate.  I ordered my dress off line (sight unseen).  I heard so many horror stories, but I had no issues.  I would do it the same way again.  I am having a band play at the wedding.  This is in addition to the string quartet playing my song.  I am so excited. No one knows about this, just the groom and I.  I will have a DJ at the reception, because after dinner, it will be a party.  We have three soul train line songs picked out.

Oh, my colors are chocolate and tiffany blue.  The FI and I are were ivory.  We have not picked out a honeymoon spot yet.  I am not even focused on that.  I can go on vacation anytime.  My wedding only comes once!!

Be sure to upload pics.  I will be adding mine.

DeaconBride    April 30, 2011   Cleveland, OH

Hello all...glad to see a new post.

I'm DeaconBride from Cleveland, OH. Our wedding is April 30, 2011. Exactly 200 days away. LOL

Our colors are Teal and Cream with a peacock feather theme. I am DIY'ing all stationary and our aisle runner. I'll let a florist do centerpieces but I have a "vision" (don't we all). We only plan to invite 150. I can't imagine 400 people at our wedding!!! But I can see how a guest list grows out of control.
I have my dress but now I am struggling over what accessories/veil to wear with it.

We have the florist, photographer, venue (still deciding on menu) and of course the officiant.

@ Cheeks11 - my 13-year old son is walking me down the aisle. I'm also an encore bride. My FI has no children. He also wants a big blowout!! LOL

    Shekema07    July 2, 2011

Hello Ladies, My name is Shekema07, I’m 26 and will be 27 by the time were married. We will also have been together 5yrs by the time we say I do. Our wedding is planned for Oct 9th, 2011. Approx 363 days away :) It will be held in Indianapolis, at the Omni. It will be about 150 people.

I have my dress it's Enzoani Cheyenne. I still am looking into accessories. I actually am a two dress bride. I originally purchased Maggie Sottero Brianna, then I bought Karena Royale and within a week I knew I made a mistake and went back to the bridal store and ask that they apply my balance to the dress of my dreams which was the Enzoani Cheyenne. Luckily the bridal shop allowed this and I was able to get my dress. So I have two dresses and will be selling the Brianna.

My colors are going to center around fall colors (i,e burnt orange, plum, green)but the dominant color will be plum, as well as the bridesmaid dresses.

I actually have the venue and the photographer. I haven't done anything else. I'm pretty lazy. I'm looking for a wedding planner because I don't have the patience to do all this lol :)

I will be wearing my hair which is relaxed in an updo of some sort.

    Have fun planning ladies :)

@DeaconBride: That's sweet. Doesn't he feel like such a man right now? My son is really excited. He's been trying to talk me into him wearing a white tux for some reason. I'm like nobody is wearing white not even me so its not happenin. lol My FI is also from Cleveland!

@plannergirl: 420? I don't think I've even spoke to that many people my whole life! lol Can't wait to see your pictures. Are you having a wedding planner to help pull everything together? I also ordered my dress online and am having it custom made. I had no desire to try on dresses and I hope I don't regret itUndecided.

    YSQueen    October 9, 2011   Atlanta

    Hello everyone!

I am YSQueen and my FI and I are getting married 10/9/11. We plan on having about 200 guests in a mansion with a garden ceremony in the back. Still trying to get everything planned....

Although I'm natural, I plan on wearing braids for the wedding day, and I plan on doing LOTS of DIY so that I can stay on budget.
