Yes, unfortunately.  It's really common for something unusual to show up in the sample...so they just want to take another one to compare.  They probably just got some of the wrong cells!  All it means is that you have to get a pap smear twice (which is lame).  Nothing to worry about :)

Yep! And it really freaked me out since I am a big worrier. However, it really wasn't anything to worry about. It happens a lot more than you would think. Just go back for your follow-up and relax about it :)

I am not writing this to worry you.  I just want you to know what it COULD be.. not what it definately is..
It could be HPV.  For most women HPV clears itself in 8-24 months... meaning that there is a batch of abnormal cells in your cervix, and those cells will shed and not be detectable after 8-24 months.

By the age of 50, 80% of women will have had HPV, and most won't even know about it.  The most important thing is to keep up with all the recommended screening... definately go back in 6 months.. there is a good chance that it will be cleared by then.

Also, I want to add that if you had sex within 48 hours prior to your pap, it can also make results abnormal, as can a lot of other things... don't worry, just make yourself very informed and educated about your sexual reproductive health.. it's very important, and not everyone pays enough attention to it!

@ ella1978 thanks.i think i may have had sex within that time frame.am also thinking it might be because of my copper iud.i did some research online and they say irritation by an iud might actually give an abnormal RESULT .am really haPPY I TAKE THIS SERIOUSLY ENOUGH TO HAVE MY SCREENING DONE RELIGIOUSLY.

Yup, been there done that... i even had to get a stupid colposcopy done that cost too much and hurt even more...

but the last 2 pap's i've had were normal...

i wouldn't worry too much, a lot of things can affect a pap smear... even something as normal as having sex too soon before the exam.

just make sure you go in for the 6 month exams to make sure to be checked out and that it isn't something serious

Not to scare you, but I had an abnormal pap and when I went back it had gotten worse.  However, after a simple outpatient procedure, it was cleared up.  I had to go back every 2 months for a while, but it was all cleared up and has been for years.  An abnormal pap is pretty common.  Almost every lady I know has had at least one.  If it is your IUD, definitely talk to your doctor about another option. (Duh, I'm sure you've already thougth of this. Smile)

I've had some abnormal cells, too. Wasn't anything too weird but I did have pre-cancer cells pop up once. They weren't there 2 years later. Another time they found a yeast infection I didn't know I had (gross, i know, sorry ladies). It could mean ANYTHING. A friend of mine had sex the day before her pap and it messed up her results, too!

I had a nabnormal once.  When they rechecked it was fine.  False alarm, I guess.  I had a friend though that had an issue.  But her doctor cleared it up by "freezing" something.  I guess the cells in question.  Maybe the same thing as Candy Nee.

I honestly I wouldn't worry too much about it. If they thought it was serious then they would not have you wait six months. I had an abnormal pap and I had to go back in a week. So if they are telling you six months you should be fine. I know plenty of girls who had had an abnormal pap that turned out to me nothing.

In my case, I was in the early stage of cervical cancer. I have been through it all and can live to tell about it so if you have any questions or concerns please feel free to message me.

The freezing thing is along the same lines as what I had.  I had a colposcopy like @missjyc and then they lasered off my cells.  My doc was amazing and put me under for the procedure.  Sometimes they do general (is that the one where the numb just the area?), sometimes they knock you totally out (like mine did), and I actually had a friend whose doc just gave her a valium.  That's not cool.  All in all, it was unpleasant and scary, but not awful.  I was more worried about having part of my cervix lasered - with regards to being pregnant.  Luckily my doctor said that it's perfectly fine.

Yup, I've had this happen at least 4 or 5 times, it's always normal the next one that I get, so I think unless you have more than 2 or 3 abnormal ones in a row, you're totally fine! It is a little unsettling and scary tho, when you first hear that, I would recommend talking to your gyno a bit more about what the abnormalities could mean and then not worrying about it until your next pap!
