Do we need them? Did you have them? Our tables are 8′ x 30″, pretty standard banquet size. I’m thinking that if we do go the table runner route, it’d be easier to sew them myself by hand (we don’t have a sewing machine, nor do I know how to use one) than to purchase pre-sewn ones or rent them and try to find the colors we want (the greens and purples we’ve seen are way too bright).
Since the tables are long instead of circular, I’d like to make even a thin runner to break up the ivory/white (we’re renting standard linen tablecloths for $7 each). For a vintage-inspired wedding, what would be the best style of table runner? Or should we skip them all together?

I don’t think table runners are necessary per se, but they definitely can jazz up a table…especially when you use some printed fabric! That way the colors don’t have to match exactly, just be in the color scheme.

I think it depends on the look you’re going for. We already had enough going on, so we skipped them.

If you don’t want them, you don’t have to have them. I’ve been to plenty of weddings without.
We are having them for our two large rectangular tables (seats 12) but we DIY’d. I’m only using them because I orginally did not want to cover the tables (they are amazing dinning sets) and was just going to add a runner instead. Since our guests list is larger than expected I’m now covering all the tables but still using the runner’s on a few (our other tables only seat 4 so I don’t think they need any extra besides the centerpieces).

For centerpieces, we’re still up in the air…we have a collection of 40s/50s advertising tins started, which I think will add a fun touch, and we’re also throwing in the good old Ball jar + candle duo as well. That should be enough visual interest without the runners, right?

@Statutory Grape: I think that would be plenty! Your tables will be lovely.
If I was impartial to runner’s I would totally skip them and use the extra change elsewhere. Not having them is another way to save 🙂

I think they’re cute and they’d be relatively inexpensive if you made them but they’re really not necessary. I’m a sewer so if you decide to do them feel free to PM me and I get give you some tips for how to make it cheap and easy 🙂

I am not doing any fancy linens (white table cloths and napkins only, and chairs without chair covers), but to add a pop of colour I decided to do table runners. My mom was originally going to do them, but I found them online from another bride selling them. Don’t know if you kijiji in the US, but it’s like Craig’s list in Canada. I bought 12 brown satin table runnersf or $20. She even threw in free tea lights! It was great!

I was thinking about using table runners, but the extra cost for something that I didn’t really need kept me from buying them. If I did know how to sew, maybe I would make them, but I’m not that talented.

I didn’t have them because we had overlays (navy overlays over white tablecloths). I WOULD use them though if I had long banquet tables like you. White seems kind of plain, especially for a more vintage wedding. But then again it’s not totally necessary, if it’s a ton of work. If you can and want to, I’d say it would look better.

I think the table runners would be a nice touch to add a pop of color. I’m also doing the long tables and deciding between navy table runners or navy overlays. If I end up doing runners, I may make them myself since it seems pretty easy – even though I don’t know how to use a sewing machine! :p

I think with ivory or white tablecloths, table runners can definitely help add some color to the table. We have royal blue tablecloths and are adding a white shimmery organza table runner that my mom sewed (super easy and cheap).

Idk if anyone said this or not already but if you make them yourself you can always get a thing of hem tape and do them without sewing. Stitch witchery is AMAZING!!

We had them but I dont think everyone needs them. Our linens were jsut plain white so without them it would have looked SO bare! We bought them online but I cant remember where exactly. What color are you looking for?
