Starting to create a budget etc.
Oh my goodness! WHY are weddings SO expenive? The idea of spending all this money… for ONE DAY!
Seriously, I kind of want to scrap the whole thing and just have a destination wedding.
I’m still reeling from the cost! The MOST affordable venue that will fit all our needs… will be in the ballpark of 40k!!!! I’m about to have a heart attack.

Destination weddings are wonderful ideas and I think that they have some really great options for people. I’ve attended several and never once have I felt like they were lacking. And, a lot of destinations offer reduced price stay, or the ceremy is free if you book X amount of nights.
Try to remember that this day is about you and your soon-to-be-husband, and think about the things that are really important to you two and stick to your guns on those. 🙂

@kimbean: I’m right there with you… on the hunt for a photographer I can afford, right now… sigh.

@HappilyEverAfter54: I’ve heard of people scoping out local colleges for photography students. Depending on how important the pictures are to you, this could be an affordable option.

wow, how many people are you inviting?

@kimbean: What are your needs? Im in the same area & maybe can help?

@sleepingbeauty88: Pictures are super super important to me… I live behind a camera myself. My budget can’t allow what I truly want though =/

Wedding costs all sound great until you add it up. And then you see all those zeros and think “how did I get myself into this?!?!?” I also live in an expensive area and totally feel your pain.

Hey girl! I just posted about this sort of thing yesterday and the other bees were really helpful in giving me some perspective:
Considering Drastically Downsizing My Wedding Due To Stress
For us, we’ve made the decision to change the plan. As tough as it can be to give up the original “vision” and ideas you had, it feels really good to get back to basics and do what you WANT, instead of what you’ve been told you should want. 🙂
Good luck and all the best to you….don’t have a heart attack, you have a lifetime of being happily married to get on with!

@red_rose:between 275-300 two HUGE families, all 4 sides… lots of out of town people, so my mom (who is footing the largest portion of the bill) is really set on having it at a hotel, or very near a hotel. We’ve pretty much already axed the idea of a city wedding, and are leaning in the burbs.
@chittychittybanebane:between 275-300 people… it’s just the sheer volume that is making this cost so much, we’re going to DIY a LOT of elements, and pare down things like flowers and centerpieces. FI is a designer, so he’s handling save the dates, invitations, and other paper goods… I haven’t even begun to think about DJ, photograhper (but won’t skimp on that… I want amazing pictures), videographer… and I’m sure I”m forgetting things. Stress.

@Juliepants:haha! thanks! that thread really DOES help.
I think the biggest biggest factor for us is living in Chicago… it’s mad expensive here for NO real reason!

i am all for DWs! my wedding costs, which included 10 days in Jamaica for 2 people (and 4 of those nights at a fancy honeymoon couples resort) was $15K….and that is because i splurged on several things! i could have easily done it for $10K or less. oh, that included our BBQ at home reception plus second photo shoot for one hour, as well.

chicago love, yay! yes, $$$ running through my head. I have bought a ton of DIY mags and am shopping a ton for good deals on anything I can find!

Just wanted to wish you good luck! We started planning a couple of months ago, and I totally feel your sticker shock. Hang in there!

I feel ya! We’ve been engaged for a year and we are finally starting the planning process. Between the venue, the photographer, and the DJ, my fiance is appalled. We haven’t even scouted out florists and caterers yet, and he’s now shooting down the idea of a videographer. Between just the music, the venue, and the photographer, we are already $15k in the hole… for only 100 guests.
