I had the diamond in my platinum engagement ring reset a week ago. I had inherited a 0.25 round brilliant diamond, the ring originally held a 0.15 princess cut diamond. My jeweler checked the ring beforehand, he advised that the prongs would need to be lengthened slightly to accomodate the new diamond, and it would be ready in a week. I gave the go ahead.
When I went to pick it up, from the conversation I could hear between the shop assistant and the jeweler, I got the distinct impression that it hadn’t be done. I was told to come back in an 30 minutes, that the jeweler was ‘just finishing it’…I let an hour go buy, and went back. It still wasn’t ready, I had to wait another 15 minutes.
Later in the day when I saw it in natural daylight I noticed a black blob on the band, near one of the prongs. Wasn’t very happy, as I’d been charged £100 to have the reset done.
Was able to return to the jeweler’s today. The assistant deliberately kept missing the mark, had to point it out twice. She took it to the jeweler, came back and said ‘it’s solder’…and then left a long pause, as if that was ok! I then pointed out that we hadn’t spent nearly £1000 on a platinum setting to have solder marks left on it!
Another assistant took it back to the jeweler, who said it would take a week to fix it. So not a very happy camper at this point!
Has anyone else had a diamond reset and had this happened? I was really made to feel like I was making a fuss over nothing.
