@missfrillycoat:  Look on http://www.houzz.com for inspiration.

Search whatever room you are seeking to decorate. When you see a pic or an item you like, right click to open pic in new window. (Sometimes you can also click “more info” at the bottom of the page) You will see green tags superimposed on the picture. Hover your mouse over the green tag and the item and source will be identified for you.

@missfrillycoat:  Do you know what kind of style you like?  Sleek & modern, colorful & eclectic, etc?  That will help you start looking for pieces that you’ll enjoy in your home.  Here’s a cool little “home style” quiz:

I also like the website Apartment Therapy.  It has tons of decor tips and shopping ideas and posts about real houses.

For me, I like to have mostly neutral colors as the backdrop, with lots of wood and light.  Then add in a bunch of colorful, eclectic, nature-y touches.  (My husband says my design style is “leave no surface undecorated!” but I’m trying to combat that.)  Here are a few little shots of our place:

(Yes, I may be obsessed with those pillows.)

Anyway, hope that helps some.

I’d recommend coming up with a color scheme you like and then hitting up a place like kirklands or garden ridge where they have lots of decorative accents. I like a more feminine approach to decorating, but didn’t want my husband to feel like he was in a sorority house so I got prints I liked in colors he liked (blues, greens, neutrals). I would hit up Pinterest and both of you should choose 5 pictures of houses you like…then figure out what it is that you like about those pics and if you have a similar style you can work with. It’s a good starting point.

@missfrillycoat:  Start with an item or two that you love. Or a color. Just do one room at a time, don’t overwhelm yourself. The internet is a great source for ideas but don’t be upset if you have to modify or make slight changes. This happens, we aren’t all Martha Stewart! Also, don’t be afraid to buy a bunch of things and return them. Finding what works takes time and patience…and you will make a mistake or two and just decide that it doesn’t work.

We just redid our bedroom and I decided two things; I want turquoise and mirrors. With that I ran with the idea and finally after about a year and a half managed to get everything put together. Here is a picture of the bedroom before we painted the accent wall (back wall) turquoise (please ignore the ugly overhead lighting, I NEVER use that thing). Our room is small so I definitely had to get creative and make things work!

For our bathroom I wanted chandeliers and more of a contrasted color scheme. Honestly the whole room was decorated based on the shower curtain. I found one item and ran with it. We have since painted the walls a light shade of gray and it really looks amazing (sorry I don’t have recent pics)!

Best of luck and happy decorating! It is my favorite part of a new house. 🙂

I tried the quiz. It says I like Mid Century Modern-hmmmmm not so much. I like modern, clean lines, but not to the extent of minimalist.

@missfrillycoat:  @julies1949:  Here are a couple more!  I’m such a dork, I love these things.  I agree the first one was a little intense and not perfectly accurate.  I got Cottage Chic, which is kind of true (I like rustic) but also somewhat off (it describes muted colors, I like bright and colorful).

@missfrillycoat:  Many of the choices were way too busy for me. I don’t have pics showing our home after we finished accessorizing. Note to self- take some! The pics I do have were taken right after our reno so probably won’t be of much use to you.

dining room

corner of living room- we have since added a side table to the right of the chair

the walls are all greige- a light grey, except the end wall in the kitchen. We are doing the bathroom next and will use that dark grey and white.
