I just started the Dr Brandt "blemish no more" line, it has really improved my skin so far. It is available at Sephora, and as far as I could tell does not have benzoyl peroxide.
Bare minerals is the best, isn't it?!
But if this is something you're really concerned about, visit the dermatologist! They can help you out with products and treatments that will work for you...
I have it! I thought I would outgrow it about.....10 years ago, but alas, it's still here. Going to a dermatologist helped, although it's starting to recur again. I would definitely recommend seeing one, as they've seen tons of cases before. Additionally, I really like NARS stick concealer (looks like a lipstick tube) - it does a pretty good job at covering scars and dark marks. Good luck!
No acne, but I have eczema which sucks just as bad and itches like the devil. Haven't found a dermatologist who can tell me what to do for it besides hydrocortisone either so. I feel your pain!
Bella
Have you tried the apple cider vinegar toner and aspirin mask home remedies? I read about them on Makeupalley.com in the reviews section and a lot of people said they really helped.
The best thing for scaring and acne is a mild chemical peel! I have heard rave reviews and I am going to have it done. It will run you about $70 but I have heard that it is worth it! Your skin will look a little rough for about a week but then the results kick in.
My acne kicked in right after I graduated from college - great. I finally went to a dermatologist about a year ago and it's made a world of difference. I'm not completely zit-free, but when I do get a pimple, it's A pimple, not a bunch of break outs or a big cystic one.
I tried a ton of drugstore cleansers and topical treatments, but the prescription stuff has worked a lot better. If you can, I'd make an appointment.
I have acne allll over my forehead. I keep wanting to try Proactive, but some people keep saying it doesn't work. I'm definitely looking for a good acne medication too.
My roommate actually told me that visits to a dermitologist were probably covered under my health insuance. Does anyone know anything about that?
I have acne and something that has helped with my scars is Jojoba Oil. It's natural and you just put a tiny bit (like 1-3 drops) in with your normal moisturizer. It's really helpful since a lot of acne treatments dry your skin our so much. It can actually help with the oiliness of your skin. Something about how the structure of the oil mimics the oil of your skin so it somehow tricks your skin into not producing it's own natural oil. Just google it and you'll find a ton of articles about it.
I'm obsessed and my FH has even started using it--just don't tell his friends about that he uses my "girly products" ;).
Also since you use such a small amount it's cheap. You can get it at most vitamin and natural herbal stores. I get mine at The Vitamin Shoppe.
Nlmiele, my visit was covered and part of my prescription was as well. It depends on your insurance plan, probably.
I've had some good luck with Kiss My Face Breakout acne gel (on Amazon or at Whole Foods) and Benefit Boo Boo Zap (Sephora). The Benefit stuff worked really well on those deeper blemishes. Neither of these has benzoyl peroxide in it.
I used to have really oily skin too, and I still have combination skin now. I notice it gets a little better when I attempt to drink lots and lots of water every day.
@bella - I have eczema too! This year it started on my hand, which is over-dry from obsessive hand washing, and it's kinda going away, finally, because I got prescription strength steroid cream for it. :(
I totally have it. Still. (Seriously? I always thought this was a little teenager thing. *sigh*) But anyway, I have oily skin that gets super dry. But always stays oily. Even when it's flaking off. Plus, it's uber sensitive. I've tried all kinds of different benzoyl peroxide cocktails, all with moderate effects, but nothing was stellar. Also, I tried proactiv for a while, with basically no improvement. Definitely not something to write home about, and it was expensive. With 3 weeks to go, I definitely wouldn't try something new, especially if you're feeling pretty cool about the makeup artist you've booked. (That's fantastic, by the way!) In the meanwhile, I'll be sending pretty-skin-vibes your way, and we'll just not think about the lucky ducks (like my fiance! argh!) who have perfect, beautiful, flawless skin.
(Oh, and I never did accutane either. My brother did, and he doesn't have acne anymore at all. I'm with you, though - too scary.)
@froggy518 I'm with you. Don't try something new so close to the wedding. I've tried just about every acne treatment and most treatments can make your skin worse before it gets better and that's the last thing you'll want to do before your wedding.
Just drink as much water as you can and take some vitamins.
Good luck!
I hear you, I have had acne since I was 12! My derm. started me on birth control when I was 14 and I have been on it ever since because my acne has always been so hormone enduced. I know you said you are allergic to benzoyl peroxide but to the other brides that have heard proactiv doesn't work it absolutely does! My face has become completely clear because of proactiv. My shipment was actually late and I went a little bridezilla on their customer service people because my face was breaking out like crazy because I was completely out and I had my engagement pics the next week, I was emotional lol. Anyway, Mary Kay makes a Timewise Miracle set and my Mary Kay rep. told me she had a bride that called her crying 4 months before her wedding because her face was so broken out & the Miracle set completely cleared it if you want to check that out. I own their microderm set, it was about $55 but its totally worth it. I feel your pain though, I hope I helped a little!
murad's post acne skin lightener has really helped me fade my old red spots faster than they would on their own.
I have acne. I get the huge, cystic buggers too! I've tried everything and never had much success - I used proactive for over a year and it never helped my skin much at all. I just went to my derm and he prescribed differin gel and minoclyclene (sp) ... so far my skin is still purging so no signes of improvement yet, but i'm very hopeful. I also scheduled an emergency derm appointment for three days before the wedding so just in case i do get a mountain on my face, they can give me a shot and take it away. I'm sorry! I know what you are going through and it sucks! Hang in there!
My friends have had a lot of luck taking the supplement chaste berry extract. It has totally cleared their faces and they tried everything in the past.
i never had a problem with it untill I hit my mid twenties, ever since it has been terrible I have tried everything except going to a dermatoligist so I am going to book an apointment, 'cause I have had it, I might try the Johoba too, it sounds promising
Normally, no. But the closer my wedding date got, the worse my skin got. Try not to stress it - i swear it makes it worse! I am still amazed as I watch these remaining little devils leave my face....
I used mineral makeup and you couldn't see any of my blemishes in my pics - it's actually pretty amazing becuase my skin looks perfect in the pics but trust me, it wasn't (I'm sure some of that was the photog, too).
I have had issues with acne as well. What really helped me was seeing the dermatologist (which is covered by insurance, but it is out of network) and also getting regular facials. The facials were expensive, but DEFINITELY worth it!
Good luck!
I suggest going to get a few cleansing facials before your wedding.. maybe 1 a week until the date?
I know it gets a bit pricey, but you're going to look at those photos for the rest of your life.. it's worth it!
I would suggest seeing your physician or dermatologist. They way to combat it is to figure out what type of acne you have (if you don't already know). For example, my skin is not oily at all - but I definitely have acne. So cleansers with salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide do nothing but dry out my skin horrendously, and don't really help my acne. I use BASIC cleansers with no harsh products in them and wash my face with cleanser once a day, and then just water once a day. I also just recently tried Bare Minerals makeup - my friend let me try hers out. WHAT A DIFFERENCE! I would really suggest picking some up - starter kits are 70 dollars (Canadian, probably cheaper in the States) at Sephora.
I know how easy it is to get down on your skin. I am worried about looking bad on my wedding day too. I would be cautious about getting facials like one poster suggested - this close to your wedding it may inflame your skin even more, depending on the type of acne you have. I would really suggest mineral makeup at this point - the coverage it provides is amazing. My skin looked flawless - I am defintely using it on my own wedding day. Good luck!
Thanks Valhalla -
I actually bought some Bare Minerals the other day after the makeup artist used some on my face and made me feel (& hopefully look) fabulous. I feel that it really brightened up my face and helped to camoflauge some of the past scarring/damage that I have. She also used the Bare Minerals bronzer, and it looked amazing! I did make an appointment with her to do my makeup on my wedding day so I'm definately looking forward to it.
No, I don't plan on getting any facials done this close to my wedding, or even seeing a derm or doctor right now. I have used several types of antibiotics in the past that are geared towards fighting acne, but none of them helped really because my acne is mostly hormone-related. She suggested putting me on BC pills but I do not like that idea because I know they can induce weight gain. *sigh* So anyways, I just live with it as best I can for now and I'm glad FH loves me anyways. He always tells me he thinks I'm beautiful even when I'm really down on myself, so I'm glad he can at least love me for the bare me, and not just the Bare Minerals me lol.
Me too.. well my skin was actually pretty decent.. until this past August. My FI and I went through a miscarriage, with the hormones going and defiantly was a VERY hard time (to anyone who has been through this, you kno how it feels :( lots of tears..stress..questioning why??? it didnt help my face thats for sure... and since then , 3 months later.. my face is still horrible.. I never wear my hair up, good thing I have long hair.. I like "hide" in it because of my recent break outs!!! Ahhhhh
Oh I'm so with you on this. I posted a while back when I was feeling especially vulnerable and having an especially awful breakout and the hive was so helpful :)
I can totally relate. I totally get pissed off when I see people with perfect skin. So not fair. I'm going to go to a dermatologist soon and try to sort this stuff out because I would love to get it in check by the wedding. I refuse to do anything involving birth control or accutane, though, so that kind of limits my options. Sigh.
Acne IS the worst! I'm so sorry you're struggling with this before your big beautiful day. I also have cystic acne (the kind that lingers for weeks, like you said) but it's being much better controlled now by Minocycline and Differin.
I also have scarring, and my dermatologist has recommended laser treatment. I don't know if that would be a good idea for you, since your day is so close, but there is GREAT makeup (that you can use under the fabulous BareMinerals) which can fill in any deep scars you have. It works great, and once you put the BM over it, you can't even tell.
Best of luck, although I'm pretty positive you'll be so radiant and glowing on your wedding day, the biggest pimple in the world couldn't bring you down. :)
I have acne too and it totally sucks! Every picture of myself i look out and say ewww does it really look that bad! BUt i too have found the amazing-ness of bare minerals products and it makes a huge difference- i can totally relate to the feeling pretty after that make up is applied. It's expensive but so worth it.
Im sure you are going to look absolutely gorgeous on your wedding day- just try to relax and enjoy every minute!
I had that kind of bad acne when I first started college and it sucked. I had used some stuff from Mary Kay that just took my face from a few zits to zit metropolis. After a while I started using some natural rice washes from Bath and Body works and that made it all better it just sort of gradually disappeared one day (both the acne and the wash, they don't carry it anymore). I switched to Bare Minerals and was still using OTC stuff and still getting a few around "Aunt Flo's visits" I then switched to Origins "Checks and Balances" face wash and "Perfect World" face cream and no joke I broke out bad for the first week and after that first week, my face is ridiculous clear, the occasional blackhead but that's what facials are for. I officially swear by that stuff and TONS of water like 3 liters a day tons. As for the scarring, have you considered microdermabrasion its not that expensive anymore.
I had it BAD in highschool. I would spend an hour each day just to cover it up! I have some scars. You can visit a dermotologist to remove scars if you want. I haven't done that though. I have some light scarring on my cheeks that I hate, so I cover it up using photo finish by Urban Decay. It fills in the scars nicely and is really weightless and so smooth feeling afterward. Seriously, your skin will look so much better! You can get a green tinted one or a clear one. The green one is good for reducing redness around the nose or on pimples.
i had acne super bad when i was in middle and high school. it is calmed down quite a bit but is still noticable. . .. i am going to be trying the "acnefree redness relief system". . . ... it is supposed to be a mild formula and all that. .. . we will see, i guess
ok - a little trick for you ladies with red bumps or swelling cysts. ive been in skincare for 15 years...
1) do not overwash. use a gentle cleanser with no alcohol.
2) Visine will temporarily vanish redness in a pimple.
3) you can get a dermatoloist to inject a cyst if its getting out od control. do this before your date.
4) use grapseed oil as a moisturizer if your skin is dry.
5) you may also use grapseed oil to remove makeup. (it is an antioxydent and will NOT clog your pores. a little goes a long way.
6) hemmoriod cream will diminish puffiness under the eyes. if it doesnt nothing will.
7) Use extra virgin olive oil if your skin is dry and 'peely' but only after a little grapeseed is applied. then use a LITTLE bit of olive oil to seal the good stuff in. Olive oil will clog your pores if used too much. if your face looks greasy ITS TOO MUCH!
8) Best make up for cover ups is medical makeup. Its somewhat greasy but great cover and helps heal not infect.
9) If you need a one off for good cover and cannot afford medical makeup - use revlon colorstay. it friggin sticks. but will aggrevate acne.
10) Lipstick that will stay all day. Idiot proof. buy covergirl 18hour lipstick - u know thw one with a tube on both ends? buy iy in a nude color close to your lips. put it on. wait till it dries to the point it is tacky then put your favorite one right over it! glues it on! if you eat greasy food you may need to retouch but otherwise you are good to go!
i have a ton of knowledge. feel free too pick my brain.
@ fyrefox: that's the same advice my derm gave me, aside from the part about grapeseed oil. Where can I buy that?
My doctor put me on minocyclene and a mild retin-A ointment, which made an ENORMOUS difference. I have super-dry skin that still breaks out--it actually breaks out because it is so dry. I can't use salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide as a result. I use St. Ive's apricot scrub and follow it with a nutregena light oil-free night cream, and that keeps my skin pretty happy until winter arrives. Microdermabrasion is also excellent; you can get some decent at-home kits for it. Just make sure you don't use it over areas with cysts, as it tends to aggravate the redness.
As for the day before the wedding, be nice to your skin, don't aggravate anything or break the skin (unless it's ready to burst), and use good concealer! This is what I've done before nearly every event since I was in high school and it's the best way to get good pictures.

I am a bride to be, and I am so excited about that (just 3 weeks to go) however, I have problem skin, which has always been a stressor for me. I'm not talking your run of the mill tiny that-time-of-the-month-slight-breakout. I'm talking hormonal, cystic acne that has left scars on my face from years of it. They have cleared up quite well compared to what they used to be about 4 years ago, but my face still has visible damage from the past, and still occassionaly gets the larger ones that tend to hang around for WEEKS - no joke. My skin is very oily, which doesn't help, and VERY sensitive. I went to a cosmetic store the other day, and she did a quick "practice" on my face with Bare Minerals (I currently use neutrogena mineral makeup, and also the acne stress-fee wash and gel, which I have found is great) and it looked really good when she got done. She used the oil-free primer on my face, before she buffed the powder foundation/bronzer all over my face, and it looked great. I actually felt pretty when i left the store, so I made an appointment to have my makeup done there on the big day. I'm just curious as to how many other brides have or have HAD acne and still have visible signs of it? It is hard to see other girls with perfectly clear skin, it really pisses me off, and yes I know I could have used accutane several years ago like my best friend did (now she IS one of those girls with perfect skin) but the side effects of that are so severe I was scared to death to try it. AND I am allergic to benzoyl peroxide, so Pro-activ was out of the question. It just hurts my self-esteem. Hopefully they can get my makeup on thick enough that I can actually feel "air-brushed" for ONE day. :(
