Have you ever fallen in love with a dress you saw a picture of and when you saw it in the store it looked nothing like what you saw in the ad?

Oh my God...yes!!!! I fell in love with a dress from "Impressions" they're stuff looks so pretty and dreamy on the ads but the quality left a lot to be desired. Funny is that their prices are similar to Maggie Sottero but her quality is so much better.

Oh yes. Its so disappointing. I fell in love with an allure dress and when I saw it in person it was so different.

Yeppers!  Just shows you how models are not the best to be posing around in wedding dresses.  I guess that's why it's just so important to try on the dress in person and see how it works with your body.

I've noticed that as well...but really, most clothes are like that...and sometimes, soemthing that looks 'eh' in print or even on the hanger looks AMAZING on!

I know what you girls mean!! I loved a Mikaella dress and I saw pictures of someone else in it and the dress looked nothing like the ad..very disappointing!! Maybe it was just the placae they bought the dress at, but I definitely will try everything on and not go by ads

Some of the Judd Waddell (sp?) dresses I fell sooo in love with in the mags, then in person I was like, hm. This looks super matronly! No way Jose.

I felt that way about Eden bridal dresses.  They just didn't fit right.  It was like a totally different dress from the one in the ad.

You know what I found most misleading was the colour.  The ad photos just give many of the dresses a different dimension of colour and when I went to see a few dresses, the details just didn't pop as I expected.

I felt that way about a Mon Cheri. I was IN LOVE with the picture and absolutely hated it in person. Even the silhouette was nothing like the picture.

Yeah, I had that problem...it's pretty depressing. BUT, on the other side of that, I totally lucked out and the dress that I fell head over heels with online I loved even more in person and ended up buying it! :-)

They should sell dressses using ads with "real" women. I mean c'mon we don't need to see a model wearing a pretty dress in order to buy it. We'll buy it all on our own depending on our individual taste.

YES, and now it's happening again with bridesmaid dresses.  They look so different in person!

    Yes, with just about everything.

(Sidebar from upthread: I tried on somewhat similar Maggie and Impression dresses and picked the Impression.  It just did better things for me!)

@catlady: Definitely! Color is another thing! If I don't wear white and i mean the brightest white on Earth, my mother and the rest of the family would hunt me down! With some of the dresses online you can't tell whether it's white or a bit beige or cream or some unknown color ha

@parfait: that's exactly why I don't buy clothing online..I don't know how people do it!! I'm very skinny and I hate going to the store to try on jeans! I literally will be there for an hour or two trying things on and come out with one pair of jeans! I've seen so many gorgeous dresses online, but I'm sure if I tried them on they would look horrible on me ha

Ugh! I still think jean shopping is way worse. It's like a 3 hour project to go find new jeans!

Another weird thing about the ads is the body shimmer or Photoshopping (don't know which) that makes the models skin look waxy like a Barbie doll. Weird!

@arizonabride: I totally agree!! I've been so disillusioned..I hate jean shopping I get so frustrated that I'm just like whatever I'll wear sweats in the winter and not go out anywhere hah..and the photoshopping needs to stop..I want to see the dress not the model

Yes! One problem I've run into is tucking/pinning for photos and on mannequins. I've noticed that with a lot of the unflattering drape styles - they pin the dress to give the girl shape in the photo, but unless you want to do the same, you're going to look pregnant!

I just read in my women's studies class the other day that 10 years ago 25% of all photos and tv/movies/videos were photoshopped. Today, 95%+ of all pictures and ads you see everywhere are photoshoped. The rate of photoshopping in tv/movies is lower due to cost, but it still sits near the 50% mark! Outrageous! How are normal people suppose to know what things really look like when we never get to see things as they really are?!

I've had disappointments with wedding dresses too. There are dresses i've tried on where were "uh, so-so," but when I've seen their ads all I can think is "that's so pretty!" Nothing about those ads are real.

It's terribly!! I mean c'mon no wonder there are so many women niptucking (is that a real word sorry my vocabulary is off today) this and that. If you believe in plastic surgery cool that's your thing, but I feel bad for young girls growing up today. I guess we just have to accept that's life and go out there and try on 3000 dresses without looking at ads. Ads are good in the sense that you get a general idea of what you may like.

OMGGGG yes! I wanted a thicker strapped, low v-neck in the front and back. and when i tried it on, i didn't even go out of the dressing room. but i guess every dress looks different on every person.

I think it works both ways. I've seen many dresses that look much better on a regular bride-to-be than the very slender model who is usually hunched over and usually her arm is in an odd position in the picture in such a way to make her look even thinner.

That happened to me with the bridesmaid's dresses I had my heart set on.  They looked AMAZING in the pictures, and when I got to the store, they looked like something a fifteen year old would wear to homecoming with gross fabric. :(

It wasn't a issue of how the dress fit in person, but how the fabric was presented in the pictures and then in person.  Big let down.
