It’s my first post on the Bee!
I’ve been lurking for a while, reading boards on rings at first, then all the waiting boards. But it’s time I admitted it – I’m a waiting Bee!
My SO (MJ) and I have been together for 16 months, living together for 4. To some, that won’t seem very long, but we’re both 33 and know what we want and that we’re ready. Most of our friends (all of mine) are married and have 1, 2, or 3 children already. We’re excited that it’s finally OUR turn to celebrate all the life milestones we’ve watched our friends achieve.
My ‘waiting’ started when we decided to move in together. Because we’re a little bit older, we’re both established in our careers and each had our own mortgages. Moving in was a big deal because one of us would be giving up their home. I didn’t need to be engaged to move in with him, but I wanted to know that we were definitely headed there if I was going to make the move! So we talked about it and he said there was no doubt we would spend the rest of our lives together. I packed and moved there Dec 2012. We’re renting out my house.
We decided to live at his built-in-1984-and-never-touched house, which was in a better location than my built-in-2006-and-beautiful house. But it needed some work. (He’d lived in it through university and rented rooms out to buddies and they’d thrown a LOT of parties. Basically, all the carpeting needed to be burned. lol)
$20k later, I asked if maybe his plan for a Feb proposal was still financially likely? He admitted the renos had cost more than he’d anticipated. Could we wait on the proposal a few months? Absolutely, I said. Totally reasonable. That’s why I asked. I just didn’t want Feb to come and go and be left wondering. (and by ‘wondering’ I meant ‘totally disappointed and pissed.’ haha)
New timeline – before June 2013.
In the meantime, he gave me his budget range and asked for some ideas of what I liked. He wants to pick the ring himself, but wanted some guidelines. Beacuse I’m totally Type-A OCD, I sent him a 5 page document with what to look for when buying a diamond (additional info on fancy coloured diamonds cause I’m in love with Canaries!), where to buy online (he’s a techie), my ring size, and rings I thought I liked and why. He laughed. He gets me. 🙂
Then we visited a few actual stores to try rings on and my ideas of what I liked totally changed! In the document I sent him I put a lot of ‘Tacori’ type settings. Fancy. At the stores, I gravitated to simple classic solitaires – and so did MJ. He laughed again at my totally 180 and said things like ‘But what if I’ve already bought one of the the other ones?’
Now it’s the end of April. Almost May! Could it be today? Tomorrow?? Maybe!!!!!
I just want to plan the rest of my life with him and get on with it. He says I have to have a nice proposal because symbolic things like that are important to me. Ugh – he’s right. He knows me so well! lol
I’m so lucky to finally be in this position – knowing I’ve the one and waiting for a wonderful proposal. But it’s so HARD to actually wait!
