I’m wondering about addressing the inner and outer envelopes for friends: If both the groom and I are better friends with the woman in an unmarried, cohabitating couple, do we put her name first? Or do we need to put the man’s name first even though we don’t know him well?

If you would like to be proper and follow etiquette, the address on the outer envelope would be:
Mr. John Doe and Ms. Jane Smith
(use titles, put the man’s name first… Some people don’t use “and”science the couple isn’t married. I, personally, think that’s a little snobby – and traditional etiquette says that when a coupl eshares a home, polite society assumes that they are secretly married; and we should treat them as such)
The inner envelope may list the name of your female friend first, just be sure to list the names of everyone invited on the inner envelope.
