With Adminstrative Professionals Day being tomorrow, I wanted to see what you all thought of recognizing the day.
I think it is nice when companies or management gives special acknowledgment to the people who work with and for them in this field, but have noticed over recent years that some people have serious unhappiness as a reaction to nice gestures made towards them on this day.
If you are an adminstrative professional, do you enjoy being recognized on this day?
If you are a boss or manager, do you recognize this day for these employees?
If you are in an office where some people are recognized on this day and others are not (because not everyone has a position in this field of work) – does it cause any tension or discomfort among employees?

@EquiBee2013: Oooh I totally forgot it’s tomorrow!
2 years ago le boss got me a gift card, but I think she forgot last year (as did I) so no, I’m not offended if they don’t get me anything.
The “appreciation” I get for doing my job is my hourly wage 🙂

I always get something for my assistant. She likes it. She works hard and is contract unlike all the engineers, so it’s a good chance for her to get something special that we don’t get.
Our department admin always takes the day off and hisses at anyone who dares to mention the word admin that “I AM NOT AN ADMIN!” Actually, she is, it’s her damn title. Somehow claiming a title that she is in no way qualified for or actually performs makes her feel better than the rest of the lowly admins, though, so, whatever. I was really hoping she’d be here this week so I could get her a big huge balloon just to watch her pop it, but sounds like she’ll be gone again.

@EquiBee2013: Interesting question. It seems like another Hallmark day to me. I’m not saying admins don’t do a lot of work – of course they do. But so does everyone. People get recognized for doing their jobs by getting paid and continuing to have jobs. I’ve never acknowledged this day even though I do have my own admin. I often buy her coffee or other treats, but not because I’m being told to.

I am a legal assistant and the there is like a 1% chance that my boss will do anything for me. Its a little depressing but whatever. I am here for the experience and a pay check, not for recognition.

Hey, I didn’t know this was a thing. I would love recognition any time of the year! That being said, I’m not expecting any. Especially since I won’t even be at work tomorrow, haha

@EquiBee2013: They always have a luncheon for us. The one tomorrow is being catered by Panera 🙂 It is nice to be recognized that we do a lot of hard work for a lot less money than our bosses.

@almostmrsj: lol. This is so true. So many admins seem to be embarassed about being admins and claim that they aren’t…when they clearly are. I can’t understand it. If you don’t like your job, find a new one. But stop lying about what you do, especially when everyone knows the truth and you just look like a fool.
I am actually LOLing at the popping balloon comment, because one of our admins did that last year and it’s been an ongoing joke.

I agree. I’m not a scrooge about it or anything but I don’t ever even think about administrative professionals day for this reason.

We’re (98% females) taken to a country club for a luncheon…
Females are not allowed to be members at this particular club.
I think it’s quite ironic.

I just got a single white rose from a couple of my co-workers. I enjoyed being recognized, as most of the other staff in our office have “programs” they work for, and Admin/Finance is always kind of overlooked.

I am an administrative professional (IMHO since I process and handle paperwork/phone calls) but this company could give 2 shits about it’s employees.. Unless you are “non union”

When I was a receptionist I got flowers, chocolates and an afternoon off. I loved it!! At my second job (I was an accounting/admin assistant), they gave me a $250 mall gift card and a gift certificate for a massage.
Although the presents definitely made the day both times, it felt nice to be recognized for the work that you do for everyone around the office.

@EquiBee2013: At my old job, the boss bought coffees for all of the administration. At my current job, my boss probably doesn’t know there is such a day, plus I work alone. I’m a little sad that he doesn’t do anything, but not devestated! I’ll just buy myself a coffee today & thank myself haha!

@BoxerLady: These responses upset me. Being an admin its nice to have one day out of the year where your boss says, “hey, thanks for all those late nights, thanks for going above and beyond and helping me with personal work, thanks for always being willing to help out even if its completely out of your field”
I’m one of those admins that has taking it upon myself to not only know MY job, but everyone elses as well. If i were to drop dead tomorrow, everyone in this office would loose their heads. Maybe admins have a special day because they are the ones usually shit on for the rest of the year?
