I work as a bookkeeper but sometimes by boss gives me other stuff to do when I’m bored. Recently he hasn’t had much for me to do and things have slowed down around here. I have a 40 minute commute one way. We work Monday through Thursday and till noon on Friday if we made up the rest of the time during the week. Recently I’ve found it to be sort of a waste of time to drive 40 minutes to work and only work for 4 hours. Tomorrow I have an informal meeting with the boss’ wife (technically she’s my supervisor but doesn’t work in the office). Do I dare ask if there’s any way I could work from home on Friday for the hours I can make up the rest of the week? Im sure I could save up some work during the week that I’d be able to do at home but not sure it would take long enough. Any advice on how to go about it?

Definately worth asking.
I would go in with a written proposal explaining what hours you would work when you are at home. How you would work (IE take your computer home on Thursday) Explain what type of work you would do at home (IE save certain tasks that can be done at home etc)
It would be a short proposal, but the fact that it is written shows you put some thought into it.

Another idea would be to work an extra hour each day Mon-Thurs and then take Friday off. It is a compressed work schedule that isn’t that uncommon in some industries.

@babymakes3: Technically I’m already doing that. Our full time is 37.5 hours and we are supposed to work 8:30-5 with an hour lunch. But to be able to leave at noon Friday, most people do 8-5 with a half hour lunch. We are allowed to come in as early as 7:30 tHough.
