I was able to lose 30 lbs prior to my wedding with a combo of diet and exercise but feel strongly I still would have seen results just by diet. I joined Weight Watchers online! It costs me $18 a month and I do all of it online or on my smart phone. I probably sound like an ad, but it truly worked for me. You can eat what you like in moderation, and as long as you track what you eat and use your points well, you can still lose even if you can’t have a consistent exercise routine. Best of luck!

@Creiddylad:  Myfitnesspal is very similar to weight watchers online except it’s $0 a month 🙂

ETA: There is a thread called BEEgest loser where we post every week about what was easier, what was harder, what sucked about the week, etc. It’s in my recent posts (we post every Monday)

Also has a board for bouncing off ideas and such. A ton of bees are on there too. If you want to “friend” me my name is Chrysoberylite (can you believe chrysoberyl was taken? By some dude in ohio or something)

I just started last week, so I’m in the same boat you are! Also if you look through my threads, find the one that says, “Experiences with myfitnesspal?”
You can see bees posting about how it worked for them, both with and without exercise! I set mine to lose 2lbs per week and though I cheated once last week, I’ve lost about 5 or 6!!

@Creiddylad:  Do I remember that you’re a botanist?  I’m a wildlife biologist and spend ~4 days a week out of town in the field working 12-13 hour days – so I can relate with the issues of being insanely busy and not having convenient access to a gym or known trails, etc.

I ordered Insanity and do the videos either at home or in my hotel room after work.  It’s only 40 minutes including warm up and stretching, so I can almost always make myself do that even when it’s been a long day.  It’s a GREAT workout – super high intensity with lots of calisthenics (really good muscle-building).  I’ve lost a couple pounds in 1 month, off an body that was normal-to-slim to begin with, and I’m sure I’ve gained muscle.  It’s pretty expensive but you get 10 videos.  I really like it!

Can you involve your SO in diet choices?  You know how they say weight/body is 80% diet, 20% exercise.  We try to eat fairly low carb (not much bread/pasta/rice/sugar) and with lots of veggies and lean protein.  It really helps to have my guy on board too.  Then we have 1-2 cheat meals a week, so we don’t feel like we’re depriving ourselves.

Good luck!

@Creiddylad:  It also has a phone app. You’d look at the computer the same amount for weight watchers online anyway! Might as well do it for free!

Jillian Michaels has a ton of great workout videos that combine strength training with cardio… They’re all pretty cheap (under $10 on Amazon), are fairly short in length, and you just need a couple light dumbbells.  I went from 5’1/115ish to 104 in a few months before my wedding by combining her DVD’s with a high-protein, low-carb, low-calorie diet.  30 Day Shred is a good place to start since it’s total body, but I also like Six Week Six Pack for focusing on abs.

@Pomapoo:  also.. if you’re somewhat computer savvy (or your FH is..) they can “magically” be downloaded and burned onto DVDs! 🙂

ETA: NSA please don’t track me down!

@Creiddylad:  For a while I looked at Jenny Craig. Then I looked at the price. Then I stopped looking at Jenny Craig!! LOL

I made up my own Jenny Craig using MFP + lean cuisines/healthy ones/ smart choice etc.

I did it 100% like that for the first week. Now I save up that stuff for work for lunch. I am teaching myself portion control by having lean cuisine FORCE it on me. Hahaha. I know I’d cheat and fill up that measuring cup just a tiny bit over what it can hold. I also saved one of those plastic trays and wash it and eat out of it when I don’t have a frozen meal instead of using one of our gigantic dinner plates. I’m trying to slowly transition away from those into making healthy decisions without sitting there and coutning each calorie, each gram of fat, each mg of sodium, etc.

But until then, I stuck with the frozen meals because they will tell you EXACTLY what you are eating.

ETA: I was talking about torrenting/downloading the stuff. Kind of what people do with movies.

The thing that helps me the most is exercising with my FI – it’s great motivation to get me off my butt and work out with him and to have someone there just doing the same horrible horrible workout (I really hate exercising!!!) as I am.  I know you said your FI gets home and runs earlier than you do, but is there any way you can convince him to wait for you?  If this is an option you want to try, of course 🙂

And also like pp have said, diet plays a big part too!
