For those of you with young children (ages 5-15): would you take your children out of school to attend a relative’s out-of-town Friday wedding? Is it even possible to take children out of public school for a day?
Here’s the backstory– I’m getting married in Miami on the Friday before President’s day next year. Although my FH and I had originally planned an adult-only wedding, at my father’s request, I’m going to extent the invitation to my 9 young cousins in addition to my older cousins and aunts and uncles (they all live in the northeast). As I’m having a somewhat small (90-ish person) destination wedding, I’m trying to plan in advance who I think will actually come so I can send out an appropriate number of invites without going way above or below my desired guest number.

Ok it is VERY possible to take kids out of public school. And My daughter isnt starting school until next year but i would do it… In fact i missed a week of school every year to go camping… and we often even brought friends along… So a kid missing some school to go to a wedding shouldnt be a issue…. well atleast it wouldnt be with my family!

Although this was years ago, I missed a full week of school several times for vacation (my dad was travelling to kid friendly places like Disney World for work, so the whole family would go). I was a great student and planned with the school to take my work with me. In short, missing one day of class probably isn’t that big of deal as long as the kid is doing well.

Yes you can take kids out of school. I think my nieces and nephews generally get President’s week off anyways.
I have no kids but if I did and it was a close relative and my husband and I planned to make the trip we would likely bring the kids.

uh-oh… I had sort of assumed that kids couldn’t get days out of school that easily! If all 9 come to my wedding I’m going to be BROKE… but I feel like I’m going to offend people if I only invite the parents :/

Well talk to your caterer i know kids 15 and under are half off and under 3 free? maybe they have something like that? that would be easier on budget

I definitely missed school for family vacations, and my middle school and high school cousins are missing a day of school for my wedding next month. But I agree about talking to your caterer – ours charge only 2/3 the cost for anyone under 21 (not using open bar) and about 1/6 the cost for anyone 12 and under for kids menu. Except my 12 year old cousin wants steak. Oh well, you choose your battles.
