- Wedding: July 2014 - Backyard
I have ok-looking hands, but I was blessed with nailbeds that are all different shapes and sizes. Not the worst fate in the world, certainly, but it is sometimes a bummer.
I usually give myself a manicure, and occasionally splurge on a manicure with friends once in a while. I always just get polish. I have never had artificial nails (tips?) or shellac. Both sound like a total pain in the butt to remove. I thought I would splurge on artificial nails (though they would still be pretty short, as nails go). Now I am not so sure, as I am afraid it will damage my nails to have them removed.
I would like a french-manicure look. I think it is understated and classic.
Folks who have had different types of manicures, please weigh in with suggestions and advice. I am clueless, but would like to have pretty nails for the wedding. Thank you!!

I have worn my nails in pretty much every way possible. If you have never worn tips, I wouldn’t suggest trying them for your wedding. Some poeple take time to get used to them (Ive been wearing them off and on since high school) I would go for shellac or gel polish (more or less the same thing) and make sure you go to a good manicurist and not a cheap run of the mill salon… Not to say anything is wrong with the manicurists at a cheap salon, its just that cheap salons are more likely to use cheap products that won’t last as long as they should and you dont want chipped nails on your wedding day. Just remember to put sunscreen on your hands before they put the polish to protect your hands from the UV light. This is best too if you are going on a honeymoon right after. Shellac/gel polish last a few weeks.

I’m personally going for tips. I know they aren’t the best for your nails however I’m not planning on wearing them long term just purely for my wedding so once they start to grow out a bit (we are going abroad to get married so i might as well keep them for the time we are away) i will have them professionally removed. I’m like you and not all my nail beds are the same shapes and i have this one nail that i like to have a chew on regularly so it doesnt grow as quickly as the rest!

I am going to try the gel polish for my wedding. I would love to have tips put on, but my job does not allow me to have them (nurse). I have heard that the gel lasts a few weeks so it will stay during the honeymoon.

Shellac or gel! Particularly if you’re going on your honeymoon right after the wedding – your nails will look fab the whole time. Not that hard to remove – soak cotton balls in acetone, put on top of your nails, wrap you fingers with foil to hoild them in place for 10 mins or so. You’ll look crazy, but it works!

I love the look and feel of shellac/gel, but it really ruins your nails for about a month afterwards (makes them peel and weak), ESPECIALLY if you get annoyed with it and start peeling it off yourself. It does look awesome though for 2-3 weeks, so if you are going on your honeymoon straight afterwards, I suggest it. it’s much cheaper than tips, too.
I plan on getting regular paint for my wedding day, only because we are going on our honeymoon 2 weeks later. By that time the shellac will have started to crack.
