Advice – What type of dress should I get?

If you are an hourglass as it sounds, I would actually avoid a-lines unless they are ruched/draped so they hug your hips and show off your waist. Put it this way – a-lines are generally the best choice for people with no waist at all, because they skim over the upper hip area, hiding the fact that there is not much difference between the waist and hip size, which clearly isn’t the case for you.

I think you should look at fit and flares or mermaids, perhaps with ruching to emphasise your curves. If you are top heavy then look for something with volume or width in the skirt to balance that out.

You would also look good in ball gowns, providing the waistline is at the right place for you. Generally, if you are short waisted you would look better in a drop waisted gown and if you are long waisted then a natural waist looks better.

I have a similar body type and i went with a trumpet- mermaid. It flattered me more and it embraced my curves. I think you should go with what you feel more confortable with, but sheath dresses are your friends. Every brand has them, i tried on several from pronovias as well. I didn’t buy it from their brand though. Now the problem is that the sample doesn’t usually fit, but you can ask them to bring a bigger size. I bought a bigger size and had it altered in the shop, it’s difficult to find a dress the exact size and fit.

LatinBride: I am very curvy…about 190 lbs and 5’7”, 36 F bust…and mermaid was the best thing I found. I’m so happy with my decision 🙂

Im 5’6 and 142lbs and curvy. Im 37 top, 29 waist, and 40 hip. I found that sheath style dresses (Like maggie sottero’s Emma) and mermaids looked nice. I was lucky to fit the sample dresses so my guess is in the right size you would look amazing in a sheath or mermaid!

Perhaps you could call around and make sure they carry larger sample sizes? One store I went to had dresses from 2-22 other stores only carried sizes 8-12 and pretty much all the samples fit me which was nice.

Anyways your curves sound beautiful and I think you would be lost in a ballgown or Aline.

LatinBride: Even though I ended up going with a flowy A-line, I had some really good experiences in modified mermaids and sheaths too. My figure is a slightly bottom heavy hourglass (and I have broad shoulders to boot), so the right kind of mermaid dress was stunning on me.

clairebbbear: so true to avoid A-lines for wide hips (even more so if you have thin legs too!)

A-lines make me feel like a walking pyramid! I don’t go near. Not even fit and flare, if the flare is high.

Im not hourglass really I wouldn’t say but I have decent amount of boobage small waist and wide hips and a big behind! I also love my figure! My hips are defo around the 40inch mark and I’m 5ft 7.5. Mermaids and sheaths suited me best. Above is the sheath dress I chose the model is wearing a small underskirt which is why it’s kicking out so much I’m not wearing this. i had to order a size up and it’s going to be altered to fit my shape exactly. sheath dresses are great for hugging your actual curves. I felt like a big giant in anothing other than sheath or mermaid. I couldnt sit down in the sample of my dress as it was so wedged to my bottom but I still new I loved it. Just trust the shop to order the correct size and prepare for alterations. I think every dress needs to be altered for the perfect fit. the back of my dress is coming in 1.5 inches higher. The sample I tried on had the slightly higher back. I’m a 36 c bust but there’s built in cups and I felt very secure in this. Best if luck! My dress is by sottero and midegley their new collection is just to die for!!! Mine is from the spring 2014 you should look up their fall one seriously to die for dresses!
