- Wedding: October 2012
Here is my story and I hope it helps someone out there. Sorry if it’s long.
I’m having a small Destination Wedding wedding in Mexico and my actual wedding budget is pretty small since I splurged on the resort. I have always wanted to do a trash the dress photo shoot in the ocean, but I just couldn’t imagine doing that to a nice dress. So I started looking on eBay for very inexpensive dresses. I found a nice flowy chiffon dress for around $130 it was a custom made dress from China. I was skeptical but I figured that it was just for the trash the dress anyway. Well I finally got it and it was beautiful! The quality was better than I expected. So then I went on the hunt for my “real” dress and after going to several bridal shops and trying on at least 30 dresses I just couldn’t stomach spending so much money on something that I was sure I could get from china. I tried on different styles, did a ton of research on fabric and china dresses etc. I started to look on eBay and narrowed it down to a few organza dresses. After I asked the eBay sellers A ton of questions about the fabric, beading, shape, petticoat, etc, I ordered a lace appliqué organza dress.
When I finally got in in I just wanted to cry. Yes the appliqué lace and beading was beautiful but the organza fabric was super shiny and really stiff, it reminded me of plastic. Actually if you ever accidentally melted a polyester shirt, that’s exactly what it felt like. Needless to say, it didn’t fit well because it was so stiff it didn’t hug my body. I tried to talk myself into keeping it since I would only have it on for 5 hours and only 10 people would really see me in it. I wasn’t worried about the pictures because you really couldn’t tell how bad the fabric was in a photo.
One of my friends at work finally convinced me that if I wasn’t happy with it to keep looking and that the dress is one of the most important things in a wedding.
I gave in and found a dress online from David’s bridal on sale for $299. Since I have been having so much anxiety about the dress thing, and I knew time was running out I ordered it. I got it in and it’s very nice, would I say I’m in love with it? No, but it also doesn’t fit, it’s too big. Maybe I’ll love it after its altered. Another blow was that I didn’t budget for alterations either because the dresses from china were custom made to fit me.
So the moral of the story is, after buying 3 dresses it would have been cheaper for me to just buy one dress from the bridal shop and that’s it. I only lost $250 on the bad dress but with an 8k budget for the wedding AND honeymoon, I feel like it was a lot.
I wouldn’t even feel comfortable trying to sell that dress to someone to try and recover some money. I’ll probably end up giving it to goodwill.
I have heard good and bad stories about buying replica dresses, I experienced both. Even though I did all that research before buying, it still didn’t turn out well.
I know everyone wants to see pictures but I’m at work and don’t have them. But I promise I’ll post them when I get home.
