I’m just curious really, I was reading somewhere about people not realising they were pregnant for many, many months as they kept getting a regluar bleed like AF. Some commentors made it sound far more common than I would ever have imagined. So I was wondering, did anyone have a regular montly bleed just like their normal AF during their entire pregnancy?

Just before I miscarried last December, I had a ‘period’ in November. It wasn’t a normal period, but it wasn’t werid enough to make me think anything of it. When I miscarried I was nearly 8 weeks, I got my very positive hpt two days after I figured I should have ovulated.

I think the bleeding is usually due to something like placenta issues or an irritable cervix. Or early on, it may be left over bleeding from implantation or the loss of a twin embryo.
With both pregnancies I have had some type of bleeding or spotting early on. My first pregnancy, we never really found out why it was happening.
This pregnancy, I had bright red bleeding at 12 weeks due to a lifting of my placenta (marginal bleed). I can see how one would confuse that with a period.
I am part of a mothering forum and it is really surprising at just how many experience bleeding of some sort, early on in their pregnancy (within the first tri). It’s a lot less likely to be experiencing it for the entire pregnancy though (but it does happen). I think most people who say they thought they were still having their period, have irregular cycles to begin with, so it wouldn’t really be bleeding every month like somone with a clockwork cycle.

Along with “periods” during pregnancy, a lot of women don’t have regular periods. A friend of mine really only gets a couple periods a year, and could easily be pretty far along before realizing she was pregnant if she only focused on missed periods.

urchin: It’s amazing how ignorant I was of my body before I started TTC, how much I just didnt and still dont know, about myself and about how a woman’s body works in general…..and I am a biology graduate. Its scary.

Entire pregnancy? No, but I didn’t know I was pregnant until over 8 weeks. I had either a period or implantation bleeding heavy enough I thought it was my period. They gave me a due date based on an ultrasound and a supposed conception date based on that. If that date is accurate my bleeding was 9 days after ovulation so I’m leaning towards it being implantation bleeding. It was also my first month off BCP FWIW. Doctor just told me weird things can happen when you come off BCP.
