If you are open to San Diego and your FI is in the military (or knows someone who is willing to sponsor you) look into the Admiral Kidd Club, Breakers Beach, or Club Coronado. each place is military property but if you have military sponsor, you can get married there as a civilian. They're catering was affordable, the service fee was 5% less than any other place I looked at, and we didn't have to pay sales tax because it was the government so that saved a ton of money. Look at www.sdgb.com for pictures if you're interested.
@MrsPaulsBabyBallerina: Thanks so much! We haven't considered San Diego yet, but now it's open for discussion! I'll start researching now. Thanks again

Hi! This is my first post on this site (or any site outside of Facebook, for that matter). I recently got engaged and we are now in the process of finding an appropriate venue to fit out tastes. We are very easy going people, and would be perfectly happy getting married with our toes in the sand. We are very casual people. Ideally we would get married on the sand with the groom and groomsmen in khaki linen pants. Tuxedos and suits aren't really our style.
Only problem in socal, is that beaches and permits for weddings on the beach need to be submitted almost a year in advance. So, while getting married on the beach is still an option, we are now opening our minds to alternative ideas.
We are expecting between 120-150 ppl. We would love to have at least beer/wine with the potential of a hosted bar (limited time). I am not opposed to hors d'euvres and cocktails after the ceremony instead of the usual sit down dinner. But, I am also willing to do the sit-down thing as well. =)
Looking to keep our costs around $10K. I am more than willing to DIY some/most aspects of the event.
But most importantly, I need a venue! Looking in the Orange County area, preferably beach/coastal, but not dead set on that. I would say our location ranges from Santa Barbara to San Diego.
Any helpful hints, suggestions, wedding venues, etc would be greatly appreciated! thanks so much and God bless!
