Ok so we have had to change our date a few times due to scheduling conflicts with bridal party and school as well as finances. So we finally decided on Sept. 2013 at this point I don’t care what weekend – we both just want to get married!
I am originally from Pa and am a city girl, my fiance a native of Virginia (Middlesex County) is a country boy. This isn’t the first marriage for either of us, so I doubt the majority of my family from Pa will be attending. My fiance on the other hand has a guest list @ 94 currently. I believe our guest list by the time this is all is said and done will be around 100-125 MAX.
The majority of the guests will be coming from Middlesex County and a another group from Chesapeake – finding a venue to host the ceremony and reception that is centrally located for both groups seems to be a daunting task. We thought we found a great spot and had decided on The Pavilion at Deer Run – Newport News Golf Club. Well low and behold the stupid thing was struck by lightning and burnt to the ground!!!! They have an alternative of using the club house but I am just not feeling it. It’s smaller and I just can’t envision hosting a reception for 100 people there. Split level and the dance floor would be in the cafe area and I just don’t see it happening the way I dreamt about. So I need HELP!!!!
My fiance is just about to finish up his bachelor’s degree and is looking for work, I am still in school so our finances are tight. Orignially we were thinking $8k max for EVERYTHING and it was still more than we wanted to spend but just couldn’t find much in our price range.
We really don’t want to do a ballroom type venue – it’s just not us.. ok well him..lol He feels out of place which I completely understand. So I am begging for help on this one – I have searched and searched. I fell in love with the Freight Shed however it’s completely booked. I need to watch the rental fee. I have found a couple really nice places however I can’t justify spending $2k just to rent the space and then have table rentals, linens, food etc on top of that and still be able to afford flowers, cake, and DJ. I have my dress thankfully but that is about it.
This was supposed to be fun, but it’s not. I am throwing my hands up in the air at this point and I say I Give Up!!! HELP!!

I’m not from the area, but have you checked Here Comes the Guide? Are there any public parks you could get married in (and only have to pay for the permit)? Maybe you could also look into having the wedding in Delaware (if it isn’t too far for you). Without the sales tax, you might be able to stretch the budget a little bit more.
Edit: maybe think about extending your search to restaurants as well. Also to save money, have you thought about doing a brunch wedding instead of an evening wedding?

@Bella_and_Max: My friend is having her wedding at Deer Run next August…they are rebuilding the pavillion so I would give them a call back and get some more details if you’re still interested.

I have a whole list I gave my friend, I’ll look for it and post it here but the one off the top of my head is the freight shed in Yorktown. It’s really nice for the price and the background and surrounding area is very pretty!ETA I should readeverything before I post, sorry!

Ok So I found the list, there’s the Botanical Gardens in Norfolk, Yorktown Beach, Legacy Hall in New Town, Fred Heutte Center in Norfolk and the Planter’s Club in Suffolk. Hope these help!

@ShutterbugCait: I’ve actually checked into all of them. $1000 or more to rent plus then the tables and chairs etc on top of that. The Freight Shed is $300 for 3hrs but it is booked every weekend this year and that was of last summer 🙁
I like Newport News Park – there are two pavilions there with a gorgeous courtyard – drawback out by dusk and no alcohol – plus porta potty for guest or a walk to the ranger station to use regular bathrooms.
Right now Lee Hall Mansion is 800 to rent and then the additional price for the tent tables and chairs.

I’d advise anyone to steer clear of Deer Run or any venue in which the current vendors’s have any hand in. I’ve used them for several events because my brides insisted on the location but in every case they were dissapointed. Sure the location is nice but the food is horrible, the people are very unprofessional and the sanitary conditions are the worst. They overcharge for unoriginal Sams club food you could have made at home, they hit you two or three times with gratuity hidden in the fees and they nickle and dime you to death for not so good food. Its a total scam on the most unprofessional level. One event we actually saw a rat run out of the kitchen and into the bathroom. We found a fingernail in the pasta and discovered from employees that they were serving old left over food frozen from previous events. The young lady’s experience with no call backs and double booking should be a sign of the unprofessional standards these people have. Steer clear of that particular catering vendor and find a new location. Ask who the catering vendor is and if its anything those two have a hand in you dont want any part of it. You’d get better food from Ukrops.
