Unless it says Black Tie, and even then, a cocktail dress is perfectly acceptable for a formal event.  The last dress is not really formal enough, IMO.  The first one seems the least flattering.  That’s why I picked the 2nd.

Lovely dresses. “Formal” does usually mean long dresses, although if the MOB is going short, it would appear you have some leeway.

I’d still say that #3 might not be formal enough (love the lines of it, though!) Of the other two, I personally prefer #2, but I’d say choose based on which one looks best on you and which one you think you’ll have a better chance of wearing again in the future.

I agree with PP that the last one doesnt seem as formal. I’d go with number 2.

Jersey isn’t formal enough for the wedding you’re describing. I think the first one is most elegant, but either of the chiffon dresses would be fine. If the MOB is wearing a short dress, then obviously short must be okay!

I really love the 2nd one. The first one is too baggy looking I think.

All three are pretty dresses, but the third one (Ann Taylor) is not at all formal wedding appropriate.

Based on what the MOB is wearing, I think either of the first two wou;ld be sufficient.

I think you only have to wear floor length if it’s black tie, not formal.

I voted for the 2nd dress. I actually saw the first one at Nordstrom yesterday and its underwhelming/shapeless.
