I'm freaking out... we don't even have a venue yet, and our wedding is in May! ahggg. So basically we can't start on ANYTHING else.

    oh bum.

just seems that everything is overpriced... we've found a lot of places we like, but then we see the price and practically pee ourselves!

It's just crazy what people charge for weddings...I mean really?! It's nuts. It should be the most beautiful and special day of your life, but instead it's the most expensive... I don't want to take out any loans or go on credit... so our budget is REALLY low.

aw good luck! I hope you find something..

Really ask around.. after we booked our venue I found a ton more places that I didn't even know exsisted. Community centres and church halls... might be cheaper. Or a nice barn or something.

    Hope this helps!

Check out community centers!  We found an old church that had been turned into a cultural arts center.  It is beautiful and cheap!

I'm also getting married in May, so I know how stressed out you must be!  Obviously you can't control the costs of venues in your area, but if everything you're looking at is out of your price range, have you considered moving back the date so you can save up more money?  It's not a great solution, I know, but it may help you from becoming totally overwhelmed in planning everything in such a short time, and you may have more options in finding vendors who aren't already booked.

Also check out lodges! We have a shriners lodge, VFW's, and some elk lodges that have banquet rooms they rent out for reasonable prices!

Out of curiosity, how much have you been able to book/plan without a venue?

I too would be freaking out! That was the first thing I booked because I was nervous about booking other things and then having to switch the date due to a venue.

    Eeeek, good luck!

Look at bed and breakfasts... we are getting married at a manor house that hosts guests and is on the water. It was perfect for us! (And your guests could stay at the house for the weekend, or if it is small, you and your honey can stay there your wedding night!)

I totally second lodges (i.e. VFW) and community centers. How many people are you planning on having? Obviously, the smaller the guest list, the easier it is to find a venue (like a party room at a restaurant) and the better on your budget. Also, if the venue is the biggest issue, have you considered having the party at a family member's home or a park? Maybe some where you can rent a picnic shelter and have a fun outdoor wedding?

Also check out parks... in NY most of the state parks have great building that can be reserved from $75 to $300. That's how we found our budget friendly venue.

thanks girls! I had looked into all those options, there aren't lodges near me, you have to go pretty far north, and we have way too many out of town guests to do it so far away from the airport.

Because of my date, I couldn't plan an outdoors wedding at a park or yard - weather is pretty uncertain. And community centers are actually pretty expensive around here (the one near the ceremony church was $800 just to rent!)

Anyway, I think I finally found both my venues!!! yay. so excited. The church is about $100 to rent and the reception site is about $450...so excited!

@artsprout: you know surprisingly I've been able to plan a lot. I have so many ideas and know exactly what I want the venue to look like. I know exactly the kind of reception we'll be having, I have the order of ceremony done and those kinds of logistics, so i've been able to do a lot.

    Thanks guys!
