I have posted about my house’s dust issue, and have decided to have my home’s air ducts cleaned out professionally. We had the AC on for the first time and the house had a mildew damp smell, which Google tells me is in my vents. DH thought it was something that I made up and was unnecessary. I know that its not, plus, I have a giant dog who sheds year round and we finished the basement so I’m sure there is all kinds of debris from that getting pushed around the house for the past 6 years.
So, I joined Angies list and found a company (family owned / operated too, which is important to me!) Air Duct cleaning is not regulated in my state, but I saw pictures of their equipment and its industrial, not a shop vac and a leaf blower, and they do the anti microbial wash after.
Have you had this done? any suggestions or warnings? I’d love to hear your personal experience! also, anything that can be done after to prolong the clean?

@edgebee: There’s a ton of scams going around in Ontario about this. If you’re looking into the company though and you’re making the first contact it shouldn’t be a problem. I don’t know if it’s always neccessary but I plan on getting it done if we buy a resale that had dogs in it before.

@edgebee: DH is in HVAC, and he says this is completely unnecessary and a way to rope people in because they have this idea that their ducts must be dirty. In reality, he says ducts are built to withstand far more than the normal amount of dirt and debris that a house will accumulate, and unless the ductwork is more than 60 or 70 years old, you’re fine. 🙂

@QueenOfSerendip: lol, the house just turned 59 in April! I had the AC people out and they couldn’t find the musty smell, this is a last ditch effort! Does your DH have suggestions about furnace filters? my HVAC guy said to use the fiberglass ones, but the dust in the house is killing me so i switched to the thick 3M allergy ones. I wish I knew an HVAC guy, I feel like I get ‘shop-talked’ to by repair guys all the time, not sure who to trust!
@AB Bride: I’ve seen these scams here too! They offer coupons for like $50, show up with a shop vac and then upsell you for every vent and such. I’m glad I bought the Angies list when it had the Groupon!

@edgebee: Hmmm, let me talk to him about this tonight, and I’ll PM you with what he says. More than likely the guys you’re using are definitely trying to upsell you, DH says that’s very very common.

I’m not really sure if it’s needed or not but one of the buildings that we are responsible for maintaining had people getting sick and they thought that there might be Legionaries disease in the duct work!

I have allergies and this has helped me tremendously! It’s especially good if you have pets.
