Darling Husband & I have gone to lots of airshows, always everything went off as planned. We attended the Kansas City air show last weekend and witnessed a tragedy, one of the stunt pilots nose-dived into the ground.
It’s a very weird and horrible feeling knowing you just watched someone die. Very surreal, we felt like what was happening couldn’t really be happening and were in denial and disbelief of what we just saw. I knew logically he was dead, there’s no way the crash was survivable (he went straight into the ground, and then the plane burst into flames for several minutes until the fire crews got out there), but still part of me was thinking he was going to walk out of the flames like a movie, because it seemed so unreal that this was actually happening in real life. I’m still trying to wrap my head around it. I know it’s something I’ll never forget even though I don’t really care to remember.
I was just there with Darling Husband, we don’t have kids yet, and it was tramatic enough for us as adults to see it; I felt bad for the parents having their little kids ask “Mommy/Daddy, what just happened?”

Ugh that sucks. 🙁 Seriously, the worst thing in the world is watching someone die. It’s horrible. I’m sorry.

I heard about that. I also heard about a plane wing walker died when the person fell off the plane. I dont remember what airshow that was though.
Sorry u had to see it happen. Cant imagine. I feel so bad for the families of these two individuals.

@abbyful: This made me cry. I am so sorry you had to witness that. I don’t think I would be able to handle something like that. My prayers and wishes for his family. It is sad that someone lost their life in an air show of all things. Senseless.

Oh that’s terrible to watch. Such a shock to your system… Like you said I can’t imagine trying to explain that to a kid

Thanks everyone. I almost feel bad/greedy that it effected me like it did, since I’m a total stranger; while news reports said his girlfriend was at the show and had to watch it happened to the man she loves.
It’s definately not anything you expect to happen. Things like that happen far away and to other people. You see things like this on TV, you’re not supposed to live them yourself.
It’s definately a reminder of our mortality. None of us know what will happen and when our last day will be.

I’m so sorry you had to watch such a scary and surreal thing happen. My prayers go out to his girlfriend and family. You right, it does remind us how short life can be.

So sorry you had to see that! Just because you’re a stranger doesn’t mean it shouldn’t affect you. If it didn’t you’d be a robot. It seems like tragedies like this happen at air shows often but I have no idea how many air shows there actually are, so that may not be true.

I agree. I just can’t imagine how incredibly horrible it is for his girlfriend and family; they must be going through hell, espeically seeing it happen in person (not sure if he had family in attendence or just his girlfriend). I think seeing it happen would be worse than finding out by a knock at the door or phone call. I’m not trying to downplay the pain of anyone losing a loved one, I hope the previous sentence didn’t sound like that; just saying that actually watching it happen would make it even more disturbing.

@abbyful: Oh I’m so sorry you had to be there. My Darling Husband and I were considering going (we live only a few hours away) but due to other conflicts we couldn’t make it. His girlfriend is my 2nd cousin, I don’t know her that well but I know her sister much better. I tried to get in touch with her to see if there was anything we could do…I just can’t imagine. And the robot comment is 100% true. This was a freak accident that far too many people witnessed. I cried watching the video and I had never met him, it’s just an awful situation and again, I am so sorry you had to witness it first hand.

@abbyful: I don’t think you were down playing, I just felt like you thought your feelings weren’t “okay” because she was there to see it also, and that was worse. I can’t imagine being in her position either.
