@jholler25: I'm sorry, but this made me laugh so hard. You are to funny. I absolutly agree with what you did though. I'd rather get a pat down, then have a chance of over exposure to x-rays while pregnant. And since there aren't any studies that have really been done on those things, I don't blame you for making that choice.
I think you did the right thing getting the patdown.
I've flown once so far while pregnant and I opted for the patdown. Luckily, I told the female officer that I was pregnant and she was very gentle :)
@RR: Haha! Well, I don't even know if there's a baby in there yet or not, but the lady was nice about it:)
They were actually all really nice about it....I never said I was pregnant, I just asked if it was safe for pregnant people and I had a bit of a fear when he screamed for a female assist to do my patdown that he was going to be like, "I need a female assist! We've got a Pregnant Lady over here!" And then she would come over and be like, "Where's the Pregnant Lady who needs a pat down?!?" and the man would be like, "Here's the Pregant Lady right here!" And everyone would be staring at me even more, and then I'd have to be like, "Well, I don't know I'm pregnant, you see - I'm 9 DPO and um...." But none of that happened. The word pregnant wasn't even said again after I said it, so I was pretty impressed with how professionally they handled it:_
I was afraid they were going to make me do one when I was flying to the UK. I was 8 weeks pregnant at the time and fully prepared to refuse to go through the scanner. I got lucky enough that they weren't using them that day (I have actually never seen them use them.)
Sorry you had to go through that. I would have done the same thing!
I checked with my doctor after I found out I was pregnant because I knew that I would be flying internationally when I was about 6 months. He said that there's no real reason to worry about the body scanner - it is a little bit of radiation, but not enough to do any harm to the baby (and I have a very conservative doctor).
I've been through one already, and I'll be going through another one next weekend, and then one more in a couple of weeks (for my babymoon), but I have to say that I'm hesitant to do so, even after my doctor said it's ok. I think I might get a pat down for the one next weekend just so that I don't have *that* much radiation in one month.
ETA: I am a little curious if they can see the baby on the scanner (if I have to go through it), and if they would let me see it - haha. Weird, I know :-)
LOL omg you are so funny! But I would have done the exact same thing. Before my mc I had to go through the scanner thing and I told the officer I was pg and he said just walk around it no check no nothing and I said to DH wow what if I had a gun or something they didn't even check! But better safe then sorry as a mom you have to protect your kids no matter what even if they are only 9DPO :)
I don't know for sure, but I would have done the same as you did. Can never be too careful when it comes to your Little One. :)
My doc also said it was safe, but next time I'm pregnant I will definitely be getting the pat down every time I travel. I went through the scanner at 5 weeks and 6 weeks pregnant. I miscarried at 10 weeks. i'm sure that wasn't it, but the next time around I am going to be that anal crazy prego!!
I read online before I flew that the body scanners didn't give off enough radiation to harm the fetus. I got lucky at the airport though and the TSA agent saw my belly and let me go through the old metal detector instead. I was going to ask for the pat down instead of going through the body scanner but fortunately it didn't come to that for me.
when I read this, it made me smile! :) I would have done the same thing!
I typed this OP while I was on the plane, but I've thought about it some more and here's what I think:
I was really glad to know that even on a day where body scans were "mandatory" for everyone,and security alert was at it's highest, TSA recognized that pregnant women may be uncomfortable with that. And they asked me zero questions, just did the pat down, it took 2 minutes, and we were good. The pat down wasn't even that bad - the lady told me everything she was about to do before she did it- because she had to "get clearance" in between spaces or something like that: read: feel in between your boobs to make sure nothing's hiding there.
I thought it would have been a bigger deal but they were pretty great.
I won't say whether or not someone should or shouldn't do the body scan, but I just personally had a minor panic attack about it and I won't even know if I'm pregnant until my blood test Thursday, so if the pat down is THAT easy and no-questions-asked, then I'll definitely be doing that each and every time.
I've flown a few times since we started trying to TTC and I've always opted for the pat down just in case! Glad to know things went smoothly for you, jholler! :)
@jholler25: Oh my goodness, your second post made me laugh so hard! Trying to explain to the onlookers that you're 9 DPO and you may be pregnant but aren't sure yet...I can totally picture it now! Glad everything worked out alright for you though with your decision to not go through the scanner.
I haven't actually thought about that and I travel a lot....maybe I should do my research. Most of my travel is international though and I don't recall seeing those full body scanners anywhere but the US. We probably won't be visiting the US until late next year so hopefully we already have a baby by then and it's a non-issue! Then I'll be freaking out about whether or not it's safe for our baby to go through those scanners - ha!
At my prenatal orientation the nurse leading the class said that the scanners at the airport are fine and exposure is minimal (but that we coudl opt for a pat down).
I've never even thought of the scanners at the airport... I think if its an international flight you have to get scanned because some people actually ingest contraband items so they wont be discovered by a pat down
I fly quite a bit for work and I've always either opted for the pat down, or just positioned myself in the line with the x-ray machine.
My favorite comment when flying to the UK was when I asked the woman working the machine if it was safe for a pregnant woman to go through. Her response? 'I wouldn't do it'. Yeah....after that, I allow extra time for the pat down. The lady at the Dallas airport was particularly nice and gentle, asking about names, how I was feeling, etc.
I had to do this last week as well... and the security gaurd looked just as unsure. I didnt know if the pat down would require them taking me to another room or what so I just did it but immediately regreted it. I wish I listened to my insticts... The security gaurd told me its equivilant to 2 minutes in the air (flying). I have to fly one more time during this pregnancy and I am def going to opt out. Better to be safe than sorry.
@noname - the nurse who ran my orientation said the same thing about the radiation exposure being equivalent to 2 minutes flying in an airplane.
Those backscatter scanners are dangerous and there are many scientists and doctors that are outraged that people are being told they are safe to pass through. From one of the many articles about the dangers, "Drawing on sources like The Mayo Clinic and The Radiological Society of North America as well as interviews with prominent radiologists, molecular biologists, and medical doctors, ionizing (penetrating) radiation in any dose, no matter how tiny, causes genetic mutations, which set all living cells exposed on the path to cancer. X-rays are considered ionizing radiation...It is undisputed within scientific circles that even a single x-ray increases a three-month-old’s chances of developing cancer in later life by at least 10 times."
No way in hell I'd go through one before, and now that I'm pregnant, I'd rather be told I can't reach my destination than go through one of those things.
good for you, you did the right thing! i'm glad you didn't listen to the totally-unsure-of-him/herself security officer. they say those machines are safe but i don't think they really know. even though a pat down from some stranger is totally creepy, better safe than sorry!

Sorry, there are no users yet.
So I'm 9 DPO today, and I had to fly to Dalles for a work meeting...
The level of national security increased today to the highest level (I'm THRILLED to be flying on this day!), so every single person had to get body scans at the airport. I'm moving along, that's cool, I figured it'd be a nightmare, then BAM, a thought hits me, and I have to bring my crazy self over to a security person...
Me: Is that body scanner safe for pregnant people?
Him: Yes {(Looks totally unsure of answer)}
Me: Isn't it a type of Xray?
Him: It is, but it doesn't penetrate the skin. {(Looks totally unsure of answer)}
Me {(gives him the side eye, thinks he just made that up)}: Can I opt out?
Him: Sure! {(Glad that the interrogation is over)}
So I had to get a very aggressive pat down by a female security officer (are they officers???), and everyone standing in line for the body scanner looked at me like I did something wrong, or like security must have thought I had 8 bombs stuffed in my Juicy Couture tracksuit.
I googled it (No! ME?) after I got through security and it said there hasn't been enough studies done on it, but it is definitely lower grade xrays, and xrays cause deformities.
What do ya'll think?
