zola87:  I don’t know about the wedding venue, but I used to be in the wedding industry .It really depends. If this is a venue that gets a lot of business all the time and you’re getting married on a Saturday in a beautiful season, they’re the only caterer, then you don’t have a lot of negotiating power. It also depends on how much you want to negotiate – are you asking for a little, or a lot? I would inquire about a custom menu – sometimes they make more sense. Also, maybe you can take out an appetizer or two (my caterer assumed generously for appetizers, but I removed two options). You can always be more honest and say, “We really love your food, however, I’d budgeted more like $130 pp… what can we do”. Also ask if they can switch to consumption bar instead of open bar if you don’t think your guests drink a lot.

zola87:  I don’t think it’s rude at all given that your expectations were not far off. So I’m assuming your 130pp includes alcohol (previously I thought 130pp is just for food), so you’re asking for a discount from 170 to 130 which is 25% – that is a lot, I think realistically a 10% discount is more likely.

So, “Hey, love your venue / food / etc., we had originally budgeted 130pp in total. Are there things that we can remove from the menu or size down, swap for different ingredients, to make it work?” Can you make the open bar shorter? Serve less variety of drinks? Switch to just beer and wine?

It does not come off as disrespectful as long as you make it clear it’s a give and take – if you budgeted less, you will get less. If they’re not a super popular venue, you have more negotiating power. The venue is GORGEOUS though, I just did a quick search for it and it shows up on several popular wedding blogs – so I would actually venture and say that they are probably popular.

Hi! I was wondering if you ever went through with the wedding or planning at Alder Manor? I just sent an email to inquire as I too have fell head over heels! I have read some mix reviews that make me nervous, are you having a positive experience? Or did you choose somewhere else?

Any and all information is appreciated! !zola87:
