Did you make an appointment to talk to the baker or did you just walk in one day? Maybe if you made an appt. you would get a more experienced person to help you? I think renting/buying/making your own stand is pretty normal. Try the other store, hopefully you'll get more answers. Good Luck!
I had an appointment. I was ready to order and everything. I asked if i should make another appointment to come back to order, she said yes. I asked who will it be with she said her or another lady. ??? lets hope the other location is better.
It sounds like you were talking to a sales girl, I can't imagine that was a baker. They tend to be pretty involved in the work, I can't imagine someone who spends all day crafting and creating cakes seeming so clueless about them. Maybe say you have questions specific to design and you need to speak to the person who designs the actual baked goods.
I am also doing cupcakes. They make me smile and I feel like they will make our guests smile as well. And smiling guests are always nice to have...
I'm doing cupcakes as well and the bakery we're using looked at me like I had three heads when I asked. Which surprised me because I think cupcakes are becoming more and more popular. I've been to two weddings in the past year that have done them! I have bought a stand from cupcaketree.com and plan on decorating it with ribbon. They have a lot of gallery photos with decor ideas. Go for the cupcakes!
Yeah for the Mile High City! I'm also doing cupcakes as well. They have cupcakes available from the caterers, but I am lucky to have a bridesmaid who is an amazing baker/decorator. However, now that it's getting closer to the date and I've started to think through the craziness that will be that day and the day before, I wonder when she will have the time to make and decorate 100+ cupcakes! She's also flying in from Maryland which doesn't make things any easier. I'd love to know how much Child's is asking for your cupcakes? The Oxford was asking $4.50 a cupcake, which seems a little high but they are very beautiful and delicious.
Our design is pretty simply, chocolate and white cakes, with varying chocolate and buttercream frosting. They'll vary with an "E" (our monogram) on some and then a small, real flower on the others.
As for the stand, I was in an antique store and was looking for a stand when a very cute elderly lady suggested this idea to me: Get three varying-sized plates (I'm using those cut crystal plates that I'm sure your Grandma has a few of), one platter size, one dinner sized and one bread sized. Then use 2 same heighth crystal/glass candle stick holders (I got mine from the dollar store) to put in between the platter and dinner plates and the dinner and bread plates. I'm using gorilla glue to glue them to the plates. I haven't put it together yet, but when I do, I'll send you a picture. It cost a grand total of $26!!! Where as a ceramic stand from Pottery Barn cost $60 something. It holds about 30 cupcakes. I ended up having to pay the $100 cake cutting fee at The Oxford because I was bringing my own cupcakes. To get my money's worth I'm going to have the wait staff constantly fill up the stand to make sure there is always enough for everyone. Or just tastefully display them next to the stand, I haven't made up my mind on that one yet.
I hope that helps. Would you mind giving me an update about the one of County Line? Mom lives close to it, so I might send her over to check it out.
@rose Great idea!!!
@snoopnaz I found cupcaketree.com last night. I think that is what we are going to do, super cheap and I can make it with damask fabric that will match my cardbox, and black or red ribbon.
@aest! YAYAYAYA another Denver bride!! Child's quoted me .99 to 2:00 depending on if i do filling and how i wanted them decorated. No idea if I was quoted right. I am just doing simple cupcakes, my frosting wil be ivory buttercream with black sprinkles (everything is better with sprinkles) and the other might be flat with a damask thing. Or with our logo my uncle is making us. I'm going to try Child's some time this week, I will let you know how it goes. There is also a cupcake shop in cherry creek, next to Zadies. I'm going to check them out this week as well (no website that i can find) . I thought about doing a cupcake buffet with one or two small real cakes and the rest cupcakes on little platters like you mentioned. http://www.happycakesdenver.com/
@AEast holy moley! $4.50 for a CUPCAKE?? The place that is doing my cupcakes (totally different area) is a bit more expensive than other bakeries and is charging about 1.25, or 1.00, i don't remember per cupcake or something? Filling would up the price by about 50cents, or if I wanted jumbo cupcakes (which I sorta do now and I kind of regret not ordering them so I'm going to call and find out when the deadline for changing the order is...), but the jumbo ones cost $2.25 each
I know!!! Kinda crazy, huh? I'm going to have to look around. If I could get them around $1 a piece, that's not bad. I was trying to save some money by having my BM do it, but I think the trade of less stress is well worth it.

So today we had our cake tasting at Child's (in denver). Soo thought they would have been more helpful. The gal we had was CLUELESS!!!
(cake girl's deer in the headlights look) Ok maybe this is more of a vent. I went there with a few ideas in mind with the hopes that they will have some suggestions/ideas/pictures. Child’s is one of the top cake bakery’s in the state. Ok and maybe I was a bit clueless and watch too much ace of cakes! LOL I guess I just expected them to draw up something, help me with a cake stand…and not be “uh I don’t know” “we don’t do cupcakes” “maybe we can cover it in ribbon”. Has anyone else had this type of experience? Am I expecting too much? So needless to say, I have been looking at cupcake stands since we got back. The stands seem simple to make. We are going to do a mix of a traditional cake and cupcakes. I do not want to go back to this Child’s (on yale) so, going to see what the one on county line is like, hopefully they wont have some clueless teen working the bridal counter. Any Denver brides out there have any suggestions for great cupcakes? I have looked at happy cakes, a bit out of my budget about double the price of child’s and you still have to rent/buy the stand. I’m guessing providing your own stand with cupcakes is normal?
