I am only 8 weeks, therefore I am not taking any chances with the foods the doctor told me to avoid..but for some reason I really want a turkey sandwich from Publix right now so bad!!! Ugh..and I miss my latte’s from starbucks.. I have no idea why I am craving things I shouldn’t have- anyone else in the same boat?

If you heat the lunch meat in the microwave until it is steaming, it will kill any listeria present and you won’t have to worry about it!
As for Starbucks… would you be able to do a decaf? I actually still had my ONE morning cup of regular coffee even while pregnant- they say you can have a certain amount of caffeine just not too much.

i havent given up caffeine. i did for first 7 weeks, then my doctor told me (as does all the online info) that under 200mg is fine (some say 300, i stick to 200 or less) so i have the odd coffee or coke. and you know…it makes me happy
most delis have a microwave. go, ask them to heat ham or whatever till steaming (then you can add it hot, or wait for it cool down) and its fine
most things are fine in moderation or adaptable to pregnancy. there are very few htings other than alcohol, smoking and drugs that are serious no nos

@lollypop: I avoided deli meat until about 4 months, then I started to have a cold cut sandwich here and there when I really felt like it. My mom ate sandwiches when she was pregnant with me, and once I was passed the initial few months I threw caution to the wind and ate a damn turkey sandwich without heating it up. And it was gooooood.

This whole topic confuses me. There were no warnings about deli meats when I had my kids. And I have 5 healthy kids. No matter what you do they will come up with something new in a few years.

i did NOT give up deli meat when i was pregnant! go have some!

If you heat the meat, the risk of listeria (the reason they say to avoid deli meats while pregnant) is eliminated. You can still eat deli meats.

I have had a couple of hoagies since I found out I was pregnant. I am not generally an over cautious person and I hate the fear that is drilled in us pregnant ladies.

Completely personal decision, and up to you what you can live with, but I have a few things I’m not meant to (cold ham, milkshakes with soft serve) every now and then, if I trust the place. I figure I’ve only had food poisoning once before, and even then it was from something I would have been “allowed” to eat while pregnant.

I eat sushi, deli meat and lots of other “bad” foods all the time. I’ve never had food poisioning in 23 years, so I’m willing to bet that I won’t have it in these 9 months either. Pregnancy is restrictive enough without stressing over a turkey sandwich.

Like the other ladies said, heat the deli meat. Or buy deli meat that’s pre sliced and packaged in a container (deli selects I think it’s called) and make your own. I had sandwiches, a ton of coke and Starbucks coffee (almost every day) and a ton of soft serve along with a million other ‘dont’s’ and I have a perfectly healthy 7 week old baby.

@hamikay: Holy crap are you not supposed to have soft serve ice cream??? Well too late for me now, I’ve had a lot. Man it never ends! My next pregnancy I’ll follow the rules and eat only steamed veggies for 9 months. Sheesh.

I gave in and had a turkey sub from Jersey Mikes last weekend. I don’t regret it at all.
