@Tbblount:  We are going to Excellence Playa Mujeres. We have a two story suite with private pool on the roof and it is an all inclusive. I’ve read amazing reviews about it, we can’t wait! We are paying exactly 4K for 6 nights flying from the Midwest.

We are staying at Cocobay Resort in Antigua.  http://www.cocobayresort.com/index.php

We booked the Premium Waterfront Suite with plunge pool.  It’s the best room they have.  Your in your own little villa so it’s pretty private.  I haven’t been there yet but the reviews are great on TripAdvisor and a travel agent told me that there is no crime on the island.  Reviews on tripadvisor also elude to that…people seem to bop about the island freely (we did not want to be confined to our resort).

The rates vary depending on when you go.  They have waterview suites with a pool, I believe, also…they are just not first row-water front.  Check out their facebook page too.  The pictures are TO DIE FOR.

Just an FYI…this is a more sleepy all-inclusive. There are only two restuarants on the resort.  One is all-inclusive…the other is not.  BUT according to reviews on tripadvisor they change the menu enough that you won’t even notice you are eating at the same place.  Not sure what flights would be from NC…

Good luck in your hunt!!!

@MrsN14:  We just got back from Excellence Punta Cana. If you didnt already, HIGHLY recommend upgrading to the Excellence Club if you can. We were so glad we did!

@Tbblount:  Recommend surfing cheapcaribbean.com. We booked with Excellence Punta Cana through them and for all flights and everything was just under 5k (upgraded suite and Excellence Club). We didnt have a private pool, but they do have suites that do. It is a bit older than Playa Mujeres, I believe, but was still very nice!

Cheapcaribbean has a ton of options though!

To @haker4:  OMGosh, that Resort looks FANTASTIC !!

I think I like their set-up even more than Sandals which we got a brochure for this week in the Newspaper.

Mr TTR & I have been fans of Antigua for some time now… that Resort sounds SPECTACULAR.  Now I sooo want to go there.  Lol

You are right in your info about Antigua… it is an extremely safe island and a long way from 3rd world (such as the DR) … and as a Bonus all the people we met were warm & wonderful.  We are anxious to go back.

Lots of great stuff to see & do in Antigua too… so you won’t get bored.

Sounds like a truly FABULOUS Honeymoon plan.

@This Time Round:  Our travel agent tried booking us at Sandals.  When we saw how far we would be from the beach and the typical hotel-style room we were staying in we opted out.  We didn’t want to stay at “honeymoon camp” (as my boss calls it).  If I’m staying on an island, I want to be on the water.  We didn’t want to have to walk a mile through the pool/swim up bar area to reach the beach.

Once we found this place we told our travel agent.  Unfortunately, she couldn’t book it for us so we did it on our own (which is fine).  I’m obsessed with reading up on the resort and Antigua and looking at pictures.  I may be more excited for the honeymoon than the wedding!! (sshhhhhh)

Yaaaay Excellence Playa M. is at the top of our list too! It looks so gorgeous, I really wanted to have an entire destination wedding there.

antisocialite:  Was just wondering if you can tell me more about your experience at Excellence Punta Cana? I’m stuck between there and Iberostar Grand Bavaro and I don’t know what to do! How was the food? I heard the water is really wavey and stuff but there is a long beach? Any information you can give me to ease my mind would be great! We are interested in the excellence because we want to rooftop terrace and private pool!

Wilson2Bee: Hey, sorry it took awhile. I was out of town! We really enjoyed Excellence. We liked the food and drinks just fine; there are 10 restaurants and room service. The water is very rough (apparently it has to do with where the resort is located on the island) so we could not go in the water, but we’re more pool people anyway, so we usually stayed there. The beach is beautiful and quiet though, and a very long stretch of it.

We did wish we had done maybe one more excursion (we only did ziplining – which was awesome!). I wish we’d done a snorkeling one. These do cost extra (no matter which resort). My only complaint was that the room we had at least was set up so if he was sitting in bed, my husband could look right through the glass shower to the toilet and see me poop! Not very romantic. But…overal, we’re married, we talk about pooping all the time – we just agreed to give each other privacy! The service there was AMAZING and I definitely recommend doing the Excellence Club. The VIP treatment is awesome, especially all the little snacks during the day.

Also they bring you pizza on the beach and at the pool 🙂

It is also an older resort and pretty quiet socially. I mean, lots of people out at the bars/drinking/wandering, etc, but, there’s only one “nightclub” and we never went. We are not big partiers though, so, we didn’t really care about that stuff. If you have other specific questions I’d be happy to answer them!

We booked through cheapcaribbean.com btw, and their customer service rules as well!

antisocialite:  hey thanks for replying! All your information is very helpful! we have decided to go with the exceplence punta Cana after all! We are getting the ocean view terrace suite with a private pool for 10 nights. We originally wanted to go for two weeks but the way the flights work we cant leave til Monday night and get there Tuesday so we would have to take 3 weeks off work! How long did you stay? I’m worried 10 nights won’t be long enough for our honeymoon! Also, I heard about the zip lining and snorkelling, how far are those excursions from the resort? I want to do the excursion to the national park but it’s 3 hours away and becomes a day trip! Just looking to make the most out of our time! I also heard about an excursion to a small little island too!!

We we definitely got the excellence package so thanks for that tip! It’s great to hear personal experiences 🙂

Wilson2Bee:  Haha, there is a door, but, the shower is glass with a window into the room. And the toilet is right behind the shower! It’s really weird.

Ziplining was pretty far away. It took most of the day (though it is billed as a half day excursion). I think we left about 11 and got back about 5:30 (pool and beach close at 6). I am not sure about the snorkeling because we didn’t do it, but, Excellence is the farthest out resort so it takes the longest to get anywhere. Enjoy, it is great!
