Get the smaller diamond and spend the remainder of the money on ADVENTURES.

If you’re getting a real diamond, go bigger for sure! You might regret not getting the 3 carat later if you know it was an option that you didn’t take. Lol for me it would be a no-brainer!

@futuremrswarden:  I think halos look costumey.. Especially with larger diamonds. I’d go for the 3 carat in a solitaire setting, but would stick with 2 (or close to it) if you go with a halo.

I have a 2 carat, round brilliant solitaire. I chose it taking into consideration my job and social circle, a 3 would look better on my size 8 finger and my FI would prefer it but.. I would personally feel uncomfortable wearing it in my day to day life. Sometimes when I look at my ring I wish for it to be bigger because big diamonds are beautiful, but then when it gets unprovoked attention by coworkers I’m glad I went with 2. I guess I’m just suggesting for your to take into account your social circle and your job when making your decision.

ETA: A pic for reference, my stone is slightly over 2 carats and my finger size is 8 1/4 (I’m pretty sure).

@KC-2722: It sucks that you feel pressured against going with the three carat that you and your FI would prefer :(. People can be really judgmental about things like that. Your ring is beautiful though and still a good size!

@SomedayHisBride:  I should mention that I didn’t necessarily feel pressured, my FI thinks the ring is a reflection on him and he was looking at stones so big you could see them from space.. So I was torn between wanting what he wanted and wanting something more modest.

I can see us upgrading in the future, but right now, my current job is at a non profit where I work with people who are living on or below the povery line, my ring is already showy and I would feel guilty working with a 3 carat ring. Down the road, in a different field (I intend to transition soon) I’d rock a 3 carat.. with pleasure and in no fear of judgement.

But yes.. you’re right.. people are so judgemental.. as you’ve been experiencing on this site! Thank you. I am pleased with the size and quality of the stone, I wanted something simple and while the stone is on the larger size, I think its still classic and modest.

Since carat weight isn’t the same as length/width, it would depend on the cut.  Cushion, asscher, emerald, and radiant cuts tend to face up smaller than rounds.  For instance, some cushions that are 3 carats will appear smaller than a 2 carat round stone.  Oval, marquise, and pear cuts tend to appear larger than rounds because they carry much of their weight in the depth.

So, when talking about finger coverage, you really need to focus on what LxW you desire and not on carat weight.

I would go with a halo that is min 2 carats! I say go as big as you can with your budget. 🙂 I love halos and wish I could have one….we are looking possibly changing my setting with my stone…round stone in a cushion shaped halo.

Anyway, I think if you want a big stone or need one due to finger size, and don’t get it, you will regret it. Mine isn’t tiny but I do wish I had more “coverage” on my finger. I think a halo will help.
