I don’t know what Ally Bank is, but could you go in person and show documentation that proves you were married? I can’t see why they would deny you the ability to cash the checks if you can show your marriage license that has your maiden name and husbands name. It’s common for people to write your new name on cheques.

FutureMrsM87:  Could you suggest emailing them a scanned copy of the marriage certificate? I was able to scan and email it to a few places when getting my name changed.

Can your spouse do it instead?

FutureMrsM87:  That’s really stupid. What if you were going to keep your maiden name? The cheques would be no good then! If it says OR then your DH should most definitely be able to get it cleared.

Do you have many cheques? As embarrassing as it sounds, could you ask the person who wrote the cheque to write another one?

FutureMrsM87:  Maybe it’s different there, but here a signature can be anything, it doesn’t have to match your name.  Endorse the check and then let your spouse deposit it.  Test one just to make sure!

Ally is not gonna take that check. (I have Ally)

Ally is also not going to take it after you get your name changed if it’s not a joint account and the check is made out to both of you.

This does happen a lot and people are just out of luck! Aren’t banks annoying? Think of the poor girls that don’t change their name or people that don’t have joint accounts. Ugh.

Does your marriage certificate have your new name on it? If so, Ally will probably accept that as proof of name change without you having to get your SSN and Drivers License. So all you have to do is go pick that up when you return from your honeymoon and scan it over to them. Just get them on chat/phone and ask what you have to show to get them to change your name on the account.

Once your name is changed on the account, you’re good to sign your checks.

Another trick I use:

Ally says they won’t take checks made out to CASH, and when you submit them online sure enough they don’t go in. But then I print out the transaction page and send it in by mail and they’ll take it.

Also – getting my SS card only took like an hour of sitting in the SS office. It’s not terribly hard if you have a little free time during the day. I think I did it on my lunch hour.

Online banks sound like a whole lot of hassle.

Is ally the only bank you use?  Can you deposit into another one then transfer it to ally?  We have ally, but i’ve never tried to deposit checks there.  I can pretty  much deposit anything into Bofa though.  I deposited checks with my new last name before I changed it, I’ve depoisted checks made out to ONLY my husband into MY acct before I added his name to it.

MsW-to-MrsM:  I’ve used 2 and they have been great.  It sounds like the US system is a hassle to me!
