I’m mostly a lurker, but I feel like I need a little help from the Bees today…
I’m currently 13 weeks 2 days pregnant (and so excited!). When I found out I was pregnant at 6 weeks, I immediatly started calling OBGYNs to get an appointment. After calling 3 or 4, I kept getting appointments more than 6 weeks away. I begged for something earlier, but the receptionist told me “Dr._____ doesn’t see patients until the 14th week.”
I’m now 1 week from my first appointment. I feel as if this is really late, and that most pregnant women have had at least one appointment so far! I’m so scared that something might be wrong, and I would never even know. I haven’t even had the chance to hear the heartbeat…
Have any Bees been in this spot before? I can’t stop worrying!

With my 1st DD I only had one ultrasound at 20 weeks. Unless you are unsure of the dates or at an increased risk for Downs Syndrome then there really isn’t much reason to do one.
If you were really set on having the NT scan done (Downs and trisomy screening) you need to call today and let them know, it has to be done by 13 weeks and 6 days. Other wise the quad screen, blood testing is just as accurate, but done later on in pregnancy.

I’m 24 weeks today and I’ve only had one ultrasound and that was at 19 weeks for the gender scan. I don’t think I will have any more for the remainder of my pregnancy – unless you are higher risk (and depending on your OB/GYN) they may not do more than one.
I think we got to hear the heartbeat for the first time at 10 weeks so they will most likely do that at your appointment next week which is just as reassuring 🙂 They do the heartbeat check at every appointment. You can ask for the NT scan and they will give you and ultrasound for that but it may or may not be covered under insurance. for us it wasn’t so we opted out.

I am 33 weeks and I have had 3 ultrasounds. One at 4 weeks because when I called I told them I had no clue how far along I was, and then another one at 8 weeks because they thought I was further along then they originally thought. Which I was. My due date went from Nov.25th to Nov.5th. Then I had one at 19 weeks for the anatomy scan.

@spookyjen: I find that really crazy that the doctor doesn’t see patients until the 14th week! What about all the people who want NT scans?? They have to be done before 14 weeks?!
If you weren’t wanting a NT scan (which looks at the amount of fluid behind baby’s neck – a risk factor for Downs Syndrome and heart defects), then I bet it’s 100% fine to wait until 14 weeks, since there’s nothing much they can do early on anyways…
But, ugh, honestly I would have died if I’d had to wait that long! That really sucks! I would have worried a lot too, even though it would be irrational!!! (Missed miscarriages at that stage are not that common – if there was a problem, you’d likely have known about it by now).
I’m glad you only have another week to wait. Good luck, I’m sure eveyrthing will be great.
ETA: I had an u/s at 6.5 weeks to rule out problems/ectopic pg because I was spotting and had had a previous miscarriage, another one at 8.5 weeks to for dating/viability, an uone at 12 weeks for the NT scan, and one at 20 weeks for anatomy/gender. I don’t think they are planning to do any more. As for appointments, I’ve had one a month since 8 weeks… all they do is check my urine for protein/keytones, weigh me, and listen to baby’s heartbeat. Starting at 30 weeks, I’ll have them every 2 weeks until some point (can’t remember) when I’ll have them weekly.

Ladies, thank you so much! I feel much better knowing that some of you had your ultrasounds after the 14th week.
I’m so jealous of the women who had theirs before the 10th week!
Worrying is part of my personality anyways, but it’s magnified since finding out I’m pregnant. I’ll just try to keep thinking positively.

I’m 12 weeks tomorrow and won’t have my first ultrasound until about 18 weeks. This is when they do the first one where I am, I guess unless you didn’t know when you conceived.
I haven’t heard the heartbeat yet, but I’m hoping to at my appt tomorrow. I’m more anxious to just hear that my baby is in there, then waiting 6 more weeks won’t be so bad.

I didn’t have my first ultrasound until like 25 or 28 weeks – a bit later than we intended but just what happened with appointments and timing. It was totally fine, health-wise. Plenty of doctors don’t see pregnant patients in the first trimester unless you need to date the pregnancy or if there are problems, or if you want certain tests completed.

I think at 14 weeks you will just about be in time for the nuchal scan – to see if there is a chance of Downs syndrome, but i do think you have had to wait a long time! I had a dating scan at 6 weeks, another at 7 weeks to check for the heartbeat, and one at 13 weeks to look for fluid behind the neck and check the baby.

Before the ninth week it mostly just looks like a white peanut or gummy bear in a black oval so you’re not missing much. By week 14 your baby will look more babylike plus some techs can tell the sex this early if they get a good look.

Don’t forget that a lot of our parents (and I’m only 26) NEVER had an ultrasound. Our grandparents never did either. They all turned out okay 🙂
I know it makes you crazy, but chin up and feet up!
