We went by last names too, because I figured that's how names are usually done, and that way couples (those with the same last name) and families would be all together.
I would recommend last name as well... it makes more sense (at least to me) =)

Last names - while I prefer the informality of first names, last names are usually what people look for and Maryalison brings up a great point about some names having multiple options.
